Well I found out this AM that my timing
indicator is loose. Hard to see from on
top or underneath. How does that
calibrated strip hold onto the block?
Pretty hard to time with my brand new
J.C. Whitney hi-tech digital, tach, adj.
adv. timing light when the darn
reference point moves! Does work slick
though as you can check RPM, set timing
and check amount of advance all with one
tool.

I dropped it to read 8 degrees (then
again maybe, maybe not)and she still
pings although not nearly as bad. Anyone
had a vacuum advance that operates too
fast? Only seems to ping on begining to
mid load. Under heavy load or when RPMS
come up it stops (like it should if the
EKE is working). The EKE is cool when
normal running but gets warm when she
pings so I figure it must be trying to
do it's job and compensate.

Anyways just wondered if the new Caspro
engine has a goofy vacuum adv. JB
mentioned he had to set it way behind to
stop the pinging. Geez... hope Caspro's
not a hot rod engine that I have to run
130 octane aviation fuel in to stop the
pinging!

I had this problem, I found that vacuum advance was the adjustable type
and it was set to the max which was 20 degrees advance. So when I would
press on the gas, it would dump 20 degrees of advance into the timing. I
set it back to 10 degrees, and now all is fine. You can check this by
removing the vac and look at the timing then attach the advance to manifold
vac and you will read the difference which will be the advance amount.

Nate,
Your letter indicates you have erroneous timing marks. It's set on 8
degrees but it sounds more like 12 degrees. Just move the distributor
towards retard until the RPM drops then advance it until the rpm increases
and then drops again. Retard it to the highest idle speed. Read your high
tech timing light and see where it says your timing is set. Whatever it
says, that is closer to 8 degrees than your timing marks. Now see how the
EKE works and how the power feels and how much it pings.
Try it. You'll like it.
