A while back I decided to prepare for Timing chain replacement, I ordered
the Cloynes True Roller from Jegs or Summit. I then saw a "True Roller"
listed in JC Whitney ordered it for $39.99. When it arrived I compared it to
the $78.99 one they were the same. I returned the more expensive one. I have
found this before from JC sometimes they get over runs or just better deals.
Might be worth a check. I posted this back in Sept. or Oct.

PS Thanks for the AC info Mark G.

But than again maybe it is a factory second or a taiwanese copy!. these
things are very precise. do you really want to take a chance for $40.?

I agree with precise nature of Timing Chains as well as other componants.
JCWhitney is not my favorite source for auto parts, however if you check
carefully you can get a name brand, not Taiwanese and not seconds. My Carbon
Metallic brake pads came from them at about $15. less than other sources,(in
original Carbon Metallic box and guarantee) my tank valve made by and
labeled Pollak came from them also at a saving ( Pollak is the company that
produced the transfer valve that is referred to generically as a Pollak
Valve). My feeling is that we can find the same items less expensively if we
search abit. Incidently the timing chain I received was made in the USA with
the same manufacturing stamps and markings as the $78.99 version, the
instruction sheet was the same. I'm sure it was made on the same line.

At the engine seminar at Myrtle Beach the general comments were that if
you replaced the timing chain use the Cloyes HD roller bearing chain.
At under $80 or less it is a good investment. I will say that some of
the J.C.Whitney parts can be junk, but I have bought brand name from
them also at 30 to 40 percent less than from other suppliers.

What was the JC-Whitney catalog number for the chain you ordered?

Dave,
The latest catalog I have #625E lists on page 229 #38LX1236N @ $39.95 True
Roller Chain Timing Set(chain & gears) I ordered from earlier catalog
#623.You will also need seal and gaskets as someone has mentioned.
Incidently there is a 10 to 15% discount on this catalog.

In my humble opinion Don, Joe Mondello (Dr. Olds) has forgotten more about
the olds 455 than any of us will ever hope to know. I have been playing
with Toronado 455 engines since 1966, and have had 10 Toronados. When I
received Joes Oldsmobile V-8 engine technical reference manual and his parts
book, I was flabbergasted at the information and suggestions he gives on
small areas of the 455 engine that I had never even thought about. Things
that make more horse power and make it more reliable.

Unless you have your engine disassembled and the crank and cam out, there is
no way to tell if you need an undersize chain. However if the engine is
original, not been apart and has not had the crank line bored when over
hauled than the regular chain set is fine.

You can get Mondello parts by calling 1-800-252-2527.

>I have just finished reading the post from Tom Warner about timing chains.
>What I want to know is how do I know if I need a .010", or what? Also, as a
>fairly new "netter", who is Joe Mondello and how do I order from him? My
>engine is a 455 with 140k miles on it.

This is in response to Heinz's questions on Cloyes timing chain
instalation.Just before taking off to Mexico the other month my wife
hurt her back so while waiting for that to heal I ran a test on how
loose was the chain and decided it was a good time to make the switch. I
had a chain I Had picked up from Joe M. last year and now was the time
to install. While the Manual is usually good in describing how to do
things in this case it is poor and not even accurate ,as it says you
have to remove the oil pan and you don't have to, in fact you can't
remove the pan! Every thing can be done from the front-at least in my
case as I have already removed the large round metal and rubber spacer
between the radiator and the fan (not the fiberglass part attached to
the rad.) This gave enough room to work and get your head up in there to
be sure that you get the timing marks in the right place. It is a bit
tricky as the new chain goes in with absolutely no slack. I learned from
the experience of pressing the chain on and found that I was one cog
off, so had to pull it off again.Take your time and eye ball it to be
sure you get the marks lined up correctly.

In my case I got some antifreeze into the oil pan so be very careful to
drain it out and keep any bits of dirt etc. from getting into the pan
when the area is opened at the front. I ended up in draining the oil pan
as well as having to do some mopping in there with rags but likely if
one got some rags in at the start it would be better and save the extra
work and mess. Also when draining antifreeze have back end of coach high
and after draining by lowering back end you might save some of the
antifreeze from draing foreword from the block.

As I recall I had to undo the front motor mount so you will need to find
a way to support the weight of the motor. I used some 2x4's on each side
of the motor on the vertical.

I was amazed at how it quieted down the motor, now having a tight chain.
I also find that my Ping Alert is much more accurate as it is not
picking up extraneous other noises in the motor.
Good luck.

Claude,
thank you VERY much for your response. That's exactley what I needed to
elevate the comfort level.
