Tid Bit. Getting to the top of the mountain. And not over load the engine or transmission.

Is there a downside to a SP other than not realizing and abusing it?
What is the approximate extra cost?

The downside is finding one. The 425SP was, IIRC, only available on the 66' and 67 Toro and the 67' Eldo. It was mated to a 3.21 FD. Then if you
have it rebuilt, you would need to find a good SP converter, or a company that knows how to rebuild one. Depending on the condition of the Trans, cost
would be about the same or a little more than rebuilding a 425. Finding now is the tough part. JMHO

" Many of the old muscle cars could be destroyed in a single extended high speed run." No foolin'.... And I expect a 455 wrung all thw way out would
do the same... they're never run that hard in the GMC except up long grades and if Jimmy the K is driving.
As to the muscle cars, I've blown up more than three Chevelles on I 85 between Auburn and Montgomery... with a 440 Charger which was misbadged :)
Stick the fender just ahead of the kid in the Chev and keep it there till he blows. Usually takes under ten miles.
