Ticking sound coming from right front wheel area

It was warm in San Antonio today and I was driving with my side windows
open. I am hearing a ticking sound coming from the right front wheel area
when I am going under overpasses. I suspect it might be the CV joint. I
have replaced the wheel bearings and hubs about 8 thousand miles ago. I
don't hear the noise unless I am close to something that will reflect it
back to me. If the window is closed I can not hear it. Any comments are
welcome.

If you have the original hubcaps that is what you were hearing more than likely.

This happened to me too! After my new Alcoa's, guess what!, No more
clicking. It was in the hubcaps.

Could it be those noisy hub caps. Areyou still in 16.5 inch wheels with
oem hub caps? It could also be steel heels and it could be pinging? I
would like to think of all the cheap fixes first. [g]

Check the obvious first:
Stone in tire?
Loose wheel fastener(s)
Brake pad loose in caliper
Brake rotor out of spec
 
I have Alcoas but the small hub cap may be the problem. I have
noticed they seem to be a little loose. I will check them out
tomorrow if it is not too cold to run with the window open. I just
set the timimg the other day so I am sure it is not pinging. I never
thought of the hub cap. I always see $$ when I hear strange noises in
the GMC. I will let the net know what I find out.

It is very easy to check the CV joints for wear that is out of tolerance. I
always checked the Toronados that I had in a Walmart or similarly large
parking lot where I could go in a tight circle to the right and than the
left at low speed. Remove the hub caps and if the CV joints are bad, you
will hear the balls interfering with the races and cage with a resulting
clicking sound. That simple. Even if you hear the clicking the CV joint
still may be OK. Old hard grease that has never been changed can cause the
balls to stick in the races also. If you inspect the outer race you will
see the wear easily and the balls will not be smooth. These CV joints are
big and strong and last a long time if properly taken care of.

Hope this helps to reduce the anxiety level about CV joints
