I am using the Howell TBI system and am very happy with it. The only
problems I had where related to the fact that I have headers. The headers
change the curves a bit so they had to send me a different PROM. I also
needed to change over to a heated Oxygen sensor. The headers cool the
exhaust gas too much during stops and the O2 sensor stops working. It still
runs OK but you loose closed loop control. The heated O2 sensor solves
that problem.
I am sure it would be cheaper to repair your carb but I like the fact that
the TBI system is closed loop. It starts great, idles perfectly, does not
fast idle when cold, automatically adjusts for fuel, load, altitude, temp
etc.
I chose the Howell system because its mostly based on the 1980's GMC
system. All the parts (computer & sensors) with the exception of the PROM,
TBI and fuel pump are standard GM parts. The TBI is a Holly. I don't know
who makes the fuel pump. The PROM is Howells modified version of a GM (454
Chevy?) prom.
Yes, it is a lot of money. If you have experience with GM's C3 system you
could (with the exception of the PROM) probably piece together a system
from salvage or service parts. The wiring harness would be a bit of a
challenge though. But the Howell kit was complete and easy to install and
they have good technical support. I am sure I paid a premium for their
services but I think I got my monies worth. So far I am very happy with the
results.
