Thought I'd drop a note when things were good, just for a change.... :-)

How much better can it get?
1) I had a successfull week at Sacramento. Long days, but made easy by having my pillow close at hand in the parking lot.

2) I had a leisure (late) start from Sacramento but still got to just north of Visalia while it was still daylight.

3) The weather is a comfy 70-ish. Still cold enough so that I don't have to use A/C, which I'm still too chicken to try :-)

4) I'm catching up on work and net email via my HP handheld and wireless modem, which, by the way, is fast enough for browsing. A much better arrangement than trying to connect via cellular. (it uses CDPD, which is actually cellular too, but built for data).

5) I have an almost empty beer next to me... and other cold ones close by.

6) ...and I'm tucked in for 16 bucks for the night.

Only downside today was 1.699 a gallon for regular unleaded.

Up and over the Grapevine in the AM.

I'm using goamerica. (www.goamerica.net)
The modem card was $400 and the service is 69/month unlimited use.
It's a true extension of the regular TCP/IP network. Email, browsing, telnet, ftp.
I use an HP handheld, but cards for regular laptops are also available.
The card doesn't work well with my Jornada Handheld, but it could be a computer problem. Stgill working on that.

There is not 100% coverage, especially in the boonies

While 69/month is somewhat steep, especially since you have to sign up for a year and I only use some of those months, it's still much better than even the occasional attempt to connect via regular cellular.
