I want to stay out of trouble. (well at least out of serious trouble.)
My question:
It appears Dr. Olds recommends the JM 16-20 cam as the ultimate, yet...
How do I reconcile these statements:
"The funny thing was that I had read all the posts and everything else I
could get my hands on and decided that I wanted the JM 16-18 cam. Got on
the phone with Joe and he talked me into the JM 18-20.
Well I hung up and did not feel all that good. Went back to the list and
the first thing I see is a post by Tom saying that when he rebuilds he will
go with the JM 16-18."
"Can't understand how anyone would want someone to strike out on unchartered
waters, do it incorrectlty and maybe waste thousands of dollars when the
information is available."
and also --
"Remember all Mondello works on is Olds engines and has been doing it for 40
years. Everyone that I know including General Motors recognizes him as THE
authority on olds engines. Remember GM engineers made many compromises when
designing the olds engines and transmissions. Mondello puts together a
much stonger and powerful engine that GM every had. Just my opinion
however."
I conclude that either cam is better than the original, but which is the
ultimate?
Can it be determined?
Is there a reason to do so?
Given what I've heard, is a valve job a preventative maintenance item?
If so, at what mileage?
I've concluded from this list that *only* a shop that *has done* Olds heads
should be used for this type of work. Period.
Second question:
Is this same grind the ultimate for the 403, or do I need to get my own
prescription from the Dr. when the day comes I do a rebuild?
Also, I have the Mondello manual. I agree with Tom that it is much like the
Bible.
It can be interpreted many different ways by each person who reads it.
