Texas travel Advice

Ladies and Gents,
For the first time since retirement and with (somewhat) newfound confidence in our coach we are going to Texas from Nebraska towards the end of
January and spending 6-8 weeks rolling/staying. We're hitting Texas at the western top, traversing the state counter-clockwise towards friends outside
of Houston. Normally, we do a max 200 miles a day but we love to stop and stay awhile when there is something fun. We have the same interwebz tools
everyone has but you all know a lot more about Texas than is in print. I would love your suggestions.

As you go south thru central Tx. - be sure to spend some time in The Hill Country of Tx. - absolutely beautiful. The Highland lakes (7) area are on the Colorado River and a sight to be experienced.

I could give you suggestions for the Dallas to corpus to Houston triangle. Maybe too much to list here. A phone call would be better.

Hi Douglas,

A couple highlights roughly starting in Amarillo and working clockwise..

The Panhandle Plains Historical museum https://www.panhandleplains.org
This is an amazingly well put together museum that really captures the feel of the history of life in this part of the country. Living on the Plains
might be boring, but the museum certainly isn't.

Palo Duro Canyon

As you travel through this area "Empire of the Summer Moon" is great as a read or an Audio Book.

West there is Guadalupe Mountains National Park, pretty but the hiking is pretty strenuous and winds can get pretty fierce in winter. It is pretty
much connected to Carlsbad Caverns National Park which I feel makes the trip over there much more worth it.

The kids are wild about it these days, so stop and grab some micro-brews and crash some bachelorette parties in Marfa

South to Big Bend National Park.
Winter is the time to go.

Unfortunately now you are left with a Big Chunk of Texas between you and Houston with not a whole lot in it. If you stay south on 90 Seminole Canyon
state park is a good stop.
https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/seminole-canyon. If you go north on 10 (after a day of going "I swear I just drove by that rock an hour ago")
you'll get into the hill country. There are better guides than me on here to get you the rest of the way to Houston.

We've been several places in Texas. It's a huge state with lots to see. In fact, we are heading to Big Bend NP, leaving Thursday after work. Will
be there for about a week. Maybe our paths will cross sometime, if not this trip.

In 2014, we and a group of our GMC friends retraced Old Route 66 from
Chicago to Santa Monica, Ca. Part of that trip we dodged into Texas long
enough to stop and try to eat that 72 oz steak. Didn't make it by a long
shot. That's about all we know about it, except for Carlsbad Caverens. That
is a sight to behold in and of itself. I am sure the river walk in Amarillo
is great, too. Plan your trip around the weather. Long, long stretches of
not much is no fun in the July/August heat.

If you do decide to visit Carlsbad Caverns, consider staying at Whites City RV Park in White City at the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
Stay one night and travel up the mountain to the park early the next day. If you do this in the middle of the week, you will find a very light crowd
making your visit to the caverns quite pleasant. After your visit, you can stay another night at White City RV or travel to the far SW corner of New
Mexico to a town called Jal. They have a small RV park with 6 or 8 level paved sites. Water, 30amp, picnic table and dump station, all on a man made
lake. Parking there is free. With that, we then honor that by filling up with fuel and eating out at one of their restaurants and get needed
supplies, to leave a little money in their town. Get stuff that you would need anyway. Very friendly people there. Very clean park and town.

Then as you are heading out through Texas, see this https://www.allstays.com/Campgrounds/ or https://freecampsites.net/ for other small town
campgrounds in the middle of nowhere between stops where you just want a place to lay your head overnight that are reasonably priced or free. JWWD

OH...BTW, don't let your gas tank go below 1/2. It is ...more often than not...a long way between gas stops. Especially off of the Interstate
system. We got caught more than once nearly running out of gas. If you are not towing, not having a life boat could be a real problem.

Carlsbad Caverns in NM was mentioned, Guadalupe Mountains National Park is nearby. They have some nice hiking trails there. Also, The Museum of the
Pacific War in Fredericksburg, TX (along with the Nimitz Museum) is a must see if you get in that area. San Antonio has a LOT to offer as well.
Shamrock TX has the art deco gas station that was used as the model for the one in the movie "Cars".
