The stop tops were never chromed, they were a brushed light nickel plate over steel and that is why they rusted.

How about sand blast and powder coating? You could pick a nice matching color? Maybe?

I've got some high heat bright header powder coat stuff that would do the
trick on your cover. Hard part will be to remove all the old plating.

Never thought about getting it powder coated...ill have to mention it to the wife and see what she thinks....i like the idea as long as it has that
chromish finish that matches the overhead oven, the vent hood etc it will be good.

I thought powder coat ovens run in the 300sF range to melt the powder? How’s that gonna work where the grates touch the surface?

Mine requires 400+ for20 minutes. The header coating, when cured, will
withstand 1200° - 1500°. Range top shouldn't get that hot, unless coach is
on fire.

Spending loads of money on an old cooktop/stovetop is not your friend. Re-=

Our X-Birchaven's kitchen is remarkably similar to JR's in that we
eliminated the stove and use a 2-burner cooktop instead (it's now got a
sit-over cover which is seldom removed):
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/our-x-birchaven/p445.html

The big difference is that the convection microwave is across the hall,
over the foot of the bed, in otherwise unused space:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/our-x-birchaven/p446.html

There have been changes since those photos were made. After the trip to
Alaska, SHE said she'd never expand that bed to queen size again, isolating
the bathroom and shutting down the kitchen. So, I converted to a sofa/twin
bed across from the kitchen, retaining the over-the-feet microwave, and
replaced the 2 captain's chairs behind the driver with another sofa/twin
bed. The 13" TV got replaced with an on-that-wall 26" flat screen.

The over-the-feet microwave location has proven ideal.

That is a really gorgeous renovation and a lot of food for thought as I
move forward with 'Blondie'.

Great use of space!

Color me jealous and very impressed!

Thats beautiful!!!
Problem with the Hughes is it has the stove above the cook top, not bellow and the range vent is part of the stove above it....microwave is bellow the
cook top....so if i change the cook top i have to take the whole deal out which means a redesign of the whole kitchen.....

Problem here for me is, and yes your setup makes sense, is i would basically have to rip out the whole kitchen etc to do that....if the oven was under
the cook top i wouldnt even worry about it. ....ill have to see if i have a picture to show you (if not ill have one saturday when i get home)
