I have to ask - what are tags? Is it something I should have? Slang for
something I already have?

Fortuneately, we have only had two broken fan belts that stopped us so
we had to make repairs in eight years and that was last summer. I hate to
even talk about it in case it brings on more problems!

Al:

Although I'm uncertain of its derivation, "tags", in certain parts of the
US, is a word which refers to a vehicle license plate. In my opinion
(others may disagree), I consider it a misused or misinformed use of a word.
Something similar to the term many people tell you now days when they want
you to wait for some reason: "wait a second", a bad habit. It's always a
whole lot longer than a second of time.

Its not listed for such use in my copy of The Random House College
Dictionary.

Boy, now watch the opinions.

Paul -
I looked in my dictionary - Webster's New Collegiate - for "tags." It says
(reads?) "a cardboard, plastic, or metal marker used for identification or
classification ."
The problem I've encountered with "wait a second" is that no one is ever
specific about which second to wait - this second, the second that is going
to occur in five minutes, or the second that is going to occur three hours
and twenty-seven minutes from now?!
Havin' fun,
Robin

Paul,

Thanks, Paul, I still use a dictionary occasionally too.

I wouldn't have thought of licence plates as tags. They seem like
something smaller to me. Since I have two, they say, " IM A 76". Many people
used to say something like, "That's a nice looking coach. What year is it?"
With the new plates now I get, "That's a nice looking coach but you don't
look 76". Sometimes you can't win!
