Vic,
The No. 1 source in S. CA is Darryl Young Racing Transmissions in L.A.
They've been building switch trannys for years.
There's a number of ways to keep the converter from locking up, we used
to hook up the solenoid wire to the brake light switch. Gentle pressure
on the pedal kept the convertor from locking up until we wanted it to.
Most of those are out of stock, high performance BOP factory cars where
the performance camshafts and high idle speed requirements would cause
the vehicle to "creep" at stop signs unless the owner had a heavy
braking foot. A switch-pitch convertor is nothing more than a pump that
isn't very efficient unless it's locked up. That sloppiness, or
slippage if you prefer, does generate some heat, but as has been said
earlier, it's not for any great length of time. The downside of those
things is the reduction in mileage directly proportional to usage. Not
the best for towing.
