Don't panic! It's sort of a cross between a and b. You MAY have enough residual vacuum to make one full, continuous
application of the brakes. If you pump them, you lose the vacuum on the first pump. Stopping time will be impaired.

It's best not to have the engine quit while you need the brakes - it's a pretty big pucker factor.

I read on Patrick's site about a project to install a supplemental vacuum
pump to prevent loss of braking if engine stalls (also recently discussed
here).

I am wondering does this mean that if the engine stalls while moving you:

a.) Have no power brake assist, or

b.) Have no brakes, like there might as well not be a pedal there.

Replies appreciated, I'm only driving uphill til then.

when I was on my way to Prescot, to a GMC Rally, I had the unfortunate
opportunity to have my engine quit on a hill. Of cours - going up hill...I
had one push on the brakes and then I started rolling downhill. Fortunately,
I put it into park just before it got away from me. The feeling of no brakes
panicked me. Fortunately, I was able at the last moment to get the coach
started and got to the campsite. There, Duane Edwards was selling some vacuum
pumps he had removed from older cars. I "ran" to his campsite and bought
one. He tested it and it worked. Now for the rest of the story. I installed
it when I got home and was real mad. It kept running although it was supposed
to shut off after hitting +-15 of vacuum. Just before I called him a few good
names, I disconnected the host that went to the brake booster and plugged it
up with my little finger. It ran about four seconds and stopped. Wow, it
worked. But the brake booster didn't. Sent that out to Bob Lamy in Calif and
had it rebuilt. Now my system runs like it's supposed to. A few seconds now
and then and I have the confidence that when, and if, I ever need brakes if
the engine stops, I have them.

That's my .02c worth.

I had something similar happen but was able to stop. I was not aware of the
booster until reading about them in the Colum this past week. Where and how do
they mount and is the 119.00 Price a fair price. Can it be installed with out too
much hassle or education in mechanical gymnastics. Saw an inexperienced person
with a screwdrive and a few wrenches. Chuck
