How not to worry about summer campsites.
Summer travel can fill the best campgrounds by 3 to 5. We traveled 17,000
miles over 6 months last year and never had met a "sorry full" situation
because we called and made a reservation by 2 PM in those areas that were in
"season". You find out what area is in season by asking the people before
you leave. Most know their "in season" area within one days drive. Some will
even recommend spots if they know where you are heading. If the area was
not in season, we had to decide if we were going to arrive early enough to
get a good site or make our call.
We would call ahead and tell them our size, how close the facilities we
wainted to be, power needs, under trees etc and what time we expected to
arrive. If they didn't have anything, they would recommend an alternate
site. We always had a site for the night and did not have to rush. By having
reservations, we could dawdle along, stop over an see things or even stop
for dinner or shopping, knowing we had a spot. Some sites would require to
be prepaid with charge card if we were to arrive after 5 or 6. Seemed fair
to us. We would often arrive to a nearly full site and just slip in and hook
up. Some sites have 800 numbers. Phone bill for 6 months and 17,000 miles
was less than $100. Wonderful investment.
