When I first signed on to the forum I was intimadated and worried about
using such a complicated R V. It seemed like everyone had constant problems
with their units. Well, let me give you my success story!
A former owner had it redone at Clasico spending $14,800.00 [receipts came
with coach] complete front suspension, rebuilt engine and all bolt-on parts,
radiator, tanks pulled, hoses, stock GM shocks etc for a trip to Alaska.
Unfortunetally his wife died before the trip and it sat for over two years.
I had placed an ad wanting to buy a GMC on the internet and the man that
bought it from the couple resold it to us at a fair price. I had Alex
Serum inspect it and he did the rear pins and bushings, exhaust, new KYB
shocks, adjusted the steering box, fantastic fan, windshield awning, etc.
[additional $3,300. total]
We had driven it less than 700 miles locally and hit the road for a 4,200
mile trip! We started out driving 60 mph and got used to it as we went.
The generator is a 6.5 kw Onan not the 6 kw, guess it had been replaced
over the years. We used it for 6-10 hours each day as needed, but only had
to run the chassis a/c on rare occasions if we had been setting for a while
and had heat build up. I sure appreciated the sun visor over the windshield
Alex installed [$300.00]. Our cruise linkage came undone, fixed it with a
fish hook! Water line in behind toilet ruptured, a piece of flex line had
been installed by someone in the past, I did not have a pressure regulator
on the hose inlet and that was the cause of the problem.
Driving 4,200 miles we averaged .15 cents per mile for gas, trip average
with gen was 7.7 for the entire trip. Only saw one other GMC on the road
and that was in N.Y.
When the roads were good we drove 70 and sometimes faster. Many folks
stopped to visit and tell stories of there missed opportunity to buy one or
knew one that had one, [most had heard a story about the air suspension
being a problem
But didn't quite know what it was!.]
Hope you guys have as much fun as we did. We are thinking of buying a very
rough 1978, and doing it from scratch! Ron & Cindy Bartels.
