First, be sure your CO detector has a good battery. Then consider. If the 'cap' has the furnace fire on one side and is cracked, it means the
remainder of the burner is suspect. Given the danger in a combustion leak I'd replace the furnace. They aren't that expensive.

If your suburban furnace is like mine then it has a cast iron burner. Find a local suburban shop and see if it can be serviced. The cast iron robes seem to be bulletproof.
