I remember years ago reading an article stating that one of the reasons all
the automobile mfg.'s were changing to red lights was the inaccuracies in
original equipment gauges. Whether it was the sender or the gauge that was
inaccurate is a good question. We had two oil gauges in the sailboat. One in
the cockpit, one in the engine compartment . Both were mechanical and after
bleeding all the air out of the lines they read the same.
