Re re-torquing a cylinder head. Before you do what you just suggested I would suggest you confirm with Matt C. the gasket guru (Compliment)
I think you should loosen 1/4 turn and retighten in tightening sequence. A large German auto company introduced a front engine
rear wheel drive liquid cooled car many years back. There was a cylinder heat bolt re-torque called out in the maintainance manual.
Not much info was given to the user except to have it done. The mechanics who did the work, mostly at dealerships, accessed the
bolts and pulled them to the required torque. When questioned about how they did the re-torque, most said they pulled the bolt to the
specified torque. Turns out a little devil called stiction was lurking in those engines. This was discovered after the dealer and the
manufacturer had to deal with LOTS of failed head gaskets. It seems like the "factory" assumed people knew to back off each fastener
and re=tighten in turn. Having the re-torque done as the manufacturer assumed it would be done solved the failing gasket problem.
