stripe removal

it's about a half day job with heat gun and putty knife...you'll have to
experiment with the heat gun to get the right temp....to hot and the
adhesive will stay on the coach...i found the adhesive in the center of the
stripe had a tendency to stick no matter what...a 15$ can of 3m vinyl decal
remover does very well on the adhesive...removing the stripe from the
entrance door removed everything to the aluminum.. but not outside the
stripe areas, it will have to be zinc chromate or epoxy primed..there where
a few places that lifted the paint but were all within the original stripe
area..will use a thin layer of bondo and prime....i might add along with the
3m product i also used lacquer thinner to remove adhesive...lacquer thinner
will not lift imron.
all thats left is to find a match for the 3 colors..when i find them ill
post the paint numbers..

Jim,
The difficulty in removing the stripes must be affected by the climatic
conditions the coach has experienced over the years. My coach was a "desert"
coach and the stripes were VERY, VERY DIFFICULT to remove. Some areas
(particularly the hood) were much harder than others. The heat gun would only
remove a 1/2 inch at a time before melting. The adhesive remover was about
effective as water. Two of us spent 2 1/2 days of steady labor removing the
stripes!!!! The final and best technique was to mask off the paint leaving only
the stripe, applying paint remover goop, pulling the stripe at exactly the right
moment, then hose off the remover before it softened the paint. If you chip or
otherwise damage the paint (grinding discs particularly) you will still "see"
the stripe through the new paint job. The next coach I paint I am going to try
a hot (steam) pressure washer and see what happens.

guys 32M makes a special disk to take the stripes of without hurting the paint.

I just got my new Estwood catalog today. They sell an "eraser"
specifically designed to remove vinyl graphics without damaging paint.
It mounts in an air drill that operates at 3,500 - 4,000 RPM. The ad
says it removes old body striping in minutes. The "ereaser" wheel &
arbor sells for $14.95. Their toll free ordering number is :
1-800-345-1178. I have not tried this but wouldn't hesitate if I was in
the "make it pretty" stage of working on my GMC. Everything I've ever
purchased from these folks has done what it was supposed to.

I have used the 3M disk & it works as advertised. You must use a high speed drill.
The stripe is removed w/absolutely no damage to the paint. Almost no effort
involved.
