Further to the posts by Edgar Kremer and Dave Greenberg regarding
removal of the vinyl stripes, I have used the 3-M product which was
(is?) a series of stacked flexible discs mounted on an arbor. I found it
to be adequate for the easier areas of removal but not much help with
the heavier stuff. Pressure deforms the thin discs to the point where
they lose effectiveness. I had better luck with a product made by Steck
in Dayton, OH, their "Stripe Stripper," which is an arbor-mounted solid
disc which sounds like the Tenco product. This tolerated higher pressure
at the rim and was more effective in some of the toughter areas. Both
products are somewhat RPM sensitive and best results were with a
variable speed electric drill with an adjustable trigger lock to
maintain the speed setting.

By tougher areas I am referring to the front hood panels and the
entrance door which were particularly tough on my '77 Palm Beach. The
bulk of the striping could be loosened by a heat gun and gentle
persuasion. I was advised to use various chemical compounds but found
that the most effective was waterless hand cleaner (such as Goop),
spread on in a thick coat and covered with Saran Wrap to keep it active
for perhaps an hour, followed by scraping with a plastic putty knife.
Several applications were necessary but the results were good and did no
harm to the finish.

The Steck product is available through many Snap-On, Mack, Matco and
Cornwell dealers or you can contact Steck directly at 800-227-8325.
The disc and arbor combination is part number 35400 and retails for
$20.95; replacement discs are part number 35405 and retail for $15.95.
Prices are plus shipping costs and they accept credit cards or will
