Arch, I'll let you know if this helps. I have my doubts. Yours
sounds
like it handles just like mine. I also have replaced shocks on mine.
Three of the rears were completely shot but cant feel any difference
with new ones. Am getting closer to new steering box. Wish someone
who
has replaced with NAPA box would chime in on how its working.
Otherwise
its Caspro.

I replaced mine with the NAPA one. I did have an opportunity to drive
the coach after I replaced all of the front end components including the
bushings, then with the new steering box and will say that the steering
box is definitely part of the equation. I've followed the posts on the
Cardone Ind. rebuilds (NAPA) and am waiting for some indication that
there's a problem. None so far. By far the best improvement in
handling came with the addition of the 4-bagger system. Lastly, I'm
going to have an alignment done by Lamey next month and will ask that
toe be set at +1/8 on both sides and follow his recommendations on
camber. Since it's around 150 miles to and from his shop I'll have an
opportunity to note the before & after results.

Steve, Thanks for info on NAPA steering box. Seems like I heard Nat
Chase had problems with this part. Can't confirm tho. When you say
you're going to have toe-in set to +1/8 on both sides, is this toe in?
Thought I had heard tires should be toed out 1/8. By the way if arch is
listening, I installed new MOOG steering damper yesterday in place of
completely worn out one. Could tell no difference in steering. Have
detected just the slightest bit of play in steering shaft. Cant really
think its enough to make any difference but will take off and inspect.

I have my numbers and 2 others on this page. I also tried to get the
"right" numbers, and the best I could do was list the ones I found plus the
factory.

Bounds drove it back from Florida. So far so good. Atleast NAPA stands
behind their stuff. Gene has my write-up on how to replace it on his site.

Last year I had mine aligned. The shop originally set the front at near
zero. It wandered on my first trip. Took it back and had it changed to 1/16"
toe-out per side. Much better. But I really think it should be 1/8" toe out
per side, considering the amount of wear in the linkage. 1/16" toe out per
side may be optimal if you have replaced a-arm bushings, ball joints, tie
rod ends, idler arm and steering relay lever.

You raise an interesting question about alignment on a towed vehicle. Most
front-wheel drive vehicles are set up with toe out because the pulling
forces of the front wheel drive will twist the wheels to nearly straight
ahead when under power. But that means that there is excess toe out when
being dragged behind your GMC. I would think you would want to reduce
toe-out from fact. specs. to reduce tire wear on a TOAD.

Nate and steve, Thanks for the info on the NAPA steering box. Decided
to buy one from them,but can't seem to get the right part number. Nate
had # 27-7519 posted on Genes site. Can anyone confirm that this is the
right #? Napa couldn't tell me what this # fits but did tell me it is
wrong # for olds toro. GMC parts book has two #s listed for 73 and
later model. Chev dealer cant tell me application of gmc part #s. Any
one happen to know what kind of veh the box came off of? And Steve, do
you know what part # you ordered from Napa?

Yes, that is the NAPA #. It is also the A1- Cardon # as well. Take your
old one in when you pick up the unit. That way you will bypass a rather
expensive core charge + you can hold the 2 side by side to be sure the
mounting tabs etc. are the same.

You may also want to pick up a new PS (or Trans) in line filter for the PS
system. I usually pull out the screen in the double male fitting on the hi
press. side of the wiper motor & install an in line unit on the low side
coming from the wiper. It is also a good idea to flush the system and put
in new fluid.

Some people go the extra mile & replace the PS pump at the same time. If
you need the # for it give me a call.
Before you call, you need to know if the PS pump has a shaft with a nut
holding the pulley or a bolt into the body holding the pulley.
