Scott,
I think it is to keep dirt out of the splines. My boot was left broken by
the PO and the shaft was worn so badly it gave me a lot steering wheel slop.
I had to replace it. Apparently the shaft has a lot of end play as you
drive.

My question was not to you specifically, I know you replaced your boot--
mine
doesn't have one. I didn't even know there was one. Everybody seems to be
saying they replaced their boot. Mine seems fine without a boot--why are
they necessary?

I just replaced mine this spring. No problems getting the correct one from=
=20
Cinnabar. Ugly project getting the joint out but repacking and replaceing=20
the boot was reasonably easy.
