Tom, I just ordered the Truecharge 40: $215 total. THANKS!

Just bought the Statpower 40 you mentioned. Thanks for calling it to my
attention. Now, where are people putting these things in the GM? Thanks;

I recently installed a Statpower 40 that I got as a refurbished unit
from Statpower. My only complaint is that I traded the buzz sound
for the sound of a fan running. The fan seems to run whenever there
is any 12 VDC load. At least at night the fan does not run because
the 12 VDC lights are off. For a "silent unit" it sure makes a lot of
noise!

It does seem to be superior in the battery charging department.

Walter,
I put mine in the same compartment as the old one, just turned it
sideways with the terminals towards the front of the coach. Works just
fine, the electrons don't care which way is up.

I agree that the fan can be a little annoying, but it sure does the job
on keeping the batteries up to charge. I am doing a equalization charge
right now, first time since I put the new batteries in at Myrtle Beach.

Is the fan running on DC or AC Richard?

Long term, that kind of thing usually gets more and more annoying...
I would solict some GMC net advice on ways to quiet the fan. I have had
equipment that had over-spec'ed fans (usually running too fast causes the
most noise). I just slowed the fan down and monitored the temp through
all modes of operation and what a *relief* to feel a cool unit and almost
silent running fan. You take you wallet in your hand when doing this,
but it all depends on how annoying it is.

When desiging that unit, they had to consider installation in some nasty,
tight environments and spec the fan to fit all or most of them.

Thanks for the response. I know the TC40 does a better job of
keeping my batteries charged. Also its nice to know I can rapidly
charge the batteries when on shore power or when the Onan is
running. I was just surprised at how loud the fan is and how
often it runs.

I have not tried to do an equalization charge yet. Main reason
is I can't get to the batteries to check the water level, much less
check the specific gravity of the cells. The previous owner installed
the batteries and cables in such a way as to make it next to impossible
to check the water level. When I get to the next phase of my electrical
upgrade I'm going to install a slide out tray for the batteries.

Right now I'm replacing the headliner, installing Guske's
day/night shades and renewing all the plastic trim pieces and so I don't
have time for electrical work now.

The fan only runs when I'm connected to AC and when
there is a load, such as when the ceiling fans and lights
are on. It's not a real problem. It's just that the
Statpower 40 was advertised as being "silent" and in
reality it's far from silent.

At least the fan doesn't run at night when I'm trying to
sleep. The old converter buzz was always on and that
really "bugged" me.

My Statpower 40+ only runs the fan when the unit is charging at 40amps. The
rest of the time it is quiet. My unit will cycle during the heavy charge
phase - running at 40amps for a long while and then dropping down.

That's interesting. I wonder if the Statpower 40 unit (as opposed to
the 40+) is designed differently regarding fan cycle times. I have the
older Statpower 40. Maybe they changed the program that runs the fan
in the 40+.

I've never seen the 40 amp LED illuminate. My fan will sometimes run
when only outputting 20 amps. Sometimes it only runs for about 30 seconds
then shuts off. I have the unit installed vertically in the electrical
compartment
with 4 AWG wire going back to the batteries. So there should not be any
problems with my installation.

I would expect the fan to run when outputting lots of current. But it will
come on just when I have 2-3 interior lights on (plus the fridge is running).

Otherwise, it is a very good battery charger. The interior lights seem
brighter
and I get a fast charge with shore power or the Onan running.

Good question. If you find out let me know!

I routinely discharge my house bank to less than 50% charge state and run
about 50% of total capacity. The TrueCharge will kick out the 40 amps for
at least a portion of the charge cycle for my usage. From 80 to 100% bank
charge state, the charger has diminishing returns. At the 50% level the
bank will absorb about 25% of the bank capacity without shortening battery
life. For my golf car batteries that means that I could charge at up to
55-60 amps at the highest rate.

The TrueCharge 40+ lets me recharge the 100 amp-hour that I use in about 3
hours. When I'm boondocking that means a Onan run of about 2 hours every
two-three days - unless I'm using the PC heavily.

Vertical is the preferred orientation since it improves convection cooling,
so that's a plus for you.

Are you using the original fridge? If so, the draw is pretty high. I
measured it last summer but don't remember the draw (about 25 amps I think).

I've gone to a 3-way fridge to extend boondocking and allow me to keep
things cool using the alternator output.

I ordered the Statpower 40 June 5 for $215 delivered. It arrived
yesterday. I installed it today in the cabinet where the original
"hum" box was. It will fit vertically w/a small mod to the cabinet.

BTW, do you know why the original converter hums?
It doesn't know the words.

I purchased the refurbished Prowatt 800 & the Truecharge 40 last December &
installed them last week. The Truecharger 40 works well but the Prowatt 800
has one problem - the fan runs all the time, even when the switch is off.

I contacted Statpower by e-mail describing the problem & received a return
call asking for details & was told that even though the refurbished prowatt
800 warranty was expired they would send me a new one immediately and I
should return the defective one as soon as it is convenient.

This sounds like good service to me.
