Good explanation. One question. I'm used to airplanes and stall speed
refers to the speed at which air quits flowing smoothly over the wings
and
lift goes away. What does it mean in the case of torque converter?

Bob,
It's a bit like that. To best explain it would be to tell you how to
test it. To test the stall rpm in a motor vehicle application the way we
do it is to apply throttle (gradually increase rpm) until one of two
things occurs first; either the engine stalls or the engine torque
overcomes the braking force and the vehicle starts moving. If you've
ever watched a drag race (professional) you'll see cars with automatic
transmissions actually doing wheel stands. Most of these type cars have
converters with "stall" speeds of around 4-5,000 rpm. They use a
line-lock (what some GMCers are using for emergency brakes) to hold the
car while the driver is keeping the engine just below stall rpm and at
the right moment, they "flash" the converter (throttle past stall rpm)
and release the line lock simultaneously. Again, this is akin to
"popping the clutch with a manual tranny car).
It's a dicey operation to drive one of these things onto a car hauler
with a 5k stall converter.
Lastly, a stock switch pitch converter does generate a tad bit more
heat in the "stall" mode but not enough to be concerned with if your
stock trans cooler has been doing the job for you.
