Not too long ago the question about going to SS for military vehicles
such as cranes, etc. on Vandenberg AFB came up. VAFB is located on the
Pacific Central Coast of California and subjected to a marien climate
and fog, which really does a number on regular metal. The brake lines
on many vehicles have failed over and over. This has usually been
identified as a failure of the operator and transportation not
inspecting them on a more regular basis. The idea of using SS was
suggested. However at the time, investigation revealed that the D.O.T
had not approved SS for the commercial vehicle as yet. This included
heavy equipment such as cranes and all Nuclear Certified Equipments. I
was trying to find out more information from the Transportation and
Safety Offices on base but they have not responded too me as yet. When
I was the Ground Safety Manager there D.O.T had not approved SS and I
think Federal OSHA had something in their books about SS for brake lines
too. Maybe somebody knows something more about this out there. I know
GMC's are not comercial vehicles but if there is a problem with SS for
comercial vehicles then the same problem might be worth looking into
berfor installing them on the GMC, food for thought!. Thanks Chuck
