This is a Sprint update from a trip to the Ukiah Rally. This was first
brought to you by Mike Finnicum and Mark Grady. I have their info and this
picture up on the site
http://www.california.com/~eagle/internet.html
Mr.C and I have the Sprint
phones and they connect to our computers (IBM,MAC) just like we would
connect at home only
no modem is required. There is a cable from the bottom of the phone that
connects to the serial
port of the computer. It is possible to do the full internet but we use
them to down load our
email. This mode using Eudora off-line email mode we can down load about
10 emails per
minute. Sprint has offered free internet access for six months so we are
using that, and long
distance is free since we have 500 or 1000 minutes per month for $55 or $75
that we can use for
voice or data. With air time costing 7.5 cents per min., it cost me about
25 cents to read 30
email.
Sprint is limited in the areas they cover. They cover the major
metropolitan areas in the Digital
mode that we use. So if you are on a fringe it is a good idea to stop for
lunch when you are
driving through a city and get your mail. Since we were camped outside a
Digital area you can
see Mr.C and I reading our mail, in the picture above, by driving 5 miles
to a signal area. We did
this for fun, but it is possible.
There were times when we encountered unresolved connection problems. It
was not clear if the
problems were the phones, the ISP, the software , but certainly not the
operators. This wireless
service is acceptable to me at this time. When they want to charge me for
data time, I might
reconsider. The free long distance calling is great and I use it for all
of my long distance
calling at home or on the road and I saved money on my total phone bill.
