That reminds me....

Someone told me that the GMC holds the land speed record for a Class A
motorhome. Is that the truth or just a joke, and if so does anyone know what
the recored is?

The GMC was clocked at 97MPH in California. It probably still holds the
class A record since the Chinook concourse is a class c. The concourse was
reworked a lot, it was not a off the show room floor like the GMC was.
Examples: Gale Banks worked on the motor with a special power pack engine,
equal length headers, raqm air system, unmuffled exhaust etc, removed the
roof air conditioner, microwave oven, generator and rear door step. Their
first timed run was at 95MPH, and the second at 99.776MPH.

I think the GMC is still faster!

OK now we are getting somewhere! Lets take your coach to California and set
the record. Arch and I will be the passengers and we can alternately drink
your scotch and if the engine overheats spray a little on it too. What an
opportunity. GMC motorhome forever.

XSpeedO,
Know you have the receipts(nice word for what the Smokies around her call
tickets). Scan them and put them on here.

Kinda rough between Jackson and Hattiesburg nowadays. Them Smokies are
everywhere now.

Roger whose first and only speeding ticket was delivered to my front window
on the day I moved to MS

If you still got a copy of one of those speeding tickets it might just
be enough documentation to put you and that GMC Rocket in the record
books. Congrats.

I don't know what the record is but in the late 70's and early 80's I drove my
'77 Royale w/403 above 100 MPH regularly up and down the hills of US 49 S and
east to FL, and got a few tickets to prove it. The naysayers can BMB.

Arch,

It sounds good to me! The biggest problem is the regulations. The
regulations are why the original GMC never really had the "official"
record. It was stock and did not meet any of the safety standards. Even
though our GMCs are probably safer than the beefed up bomb that just got
the record, we would need to add quite a few things to a GMC to get it "up
to spec" for a record attempt. They had to add a roll cage or bar (I
forget) to the motorhome, and also had to have 5 point harness, etc. The
additions would probably prohibit any of us from using our own GMC. A
project GMC might be a better idea.

It wouldn't take much to break the current record anyway. The Toronados
were even available with 2.73 final drives, but we might not need to go
with a low final drive. An engine built for high RPMs might be better
suited with a higher final drive. Since we are going over 70 at 3000 RPM
with the 3.42s, even at only 4500 RPM we would be going around 100 MPH. An
engine built to make HP up to 6000 RPM could probably use both the high
ratio final drive and the Caspro trans gears. We could also use penguin
low-profile ACs so we could keep cool while breaking the record unlike
those other guys that took off their AC :). The generator will be running
anyway to make the coffee right? I don't know if Simpson makes a 5-point
harness for the toilet, so the idea that somebody had of taking a crap
while breaking the record might be out though :).

I know there'd be no problem getting a sponsor...call Cinnabar :-)

With all the talk about exploding 'D' rated tires on regular coaches, where
the heck will we get something that will work for tires?? Maybe
Bridgestone or someone like that might be looking for a headline as well.

Most of Digest #137 failed to show up so I missed some of this Motor Home
Land Speed Record Assault thread.

Sponsors money and other assistance for a serious assault could probably be
found among the GMCMH related businesses. It will be fine advertising for
them to play a part.

Glenn once mentioned a Toronado powered Ultra motor home ran an unofficial
120 or thereabout on the highway.

With that in mind, this assault should consider setting a real benchmark
record that will stand for awhile.

A prudent sober record assault might consider a cautious multiple year
approach, gaining experience and slowly building up to an ultimate effort.

Year one ----- run a conventional powered but lightweight unit. Goal 100+

Year two ------ one set of rear wheels is replaced with a second Toronado
FWD setup. Goal 125+

Year three ---- other set of rear wheels is replaced with a third Toronado
FWD setup. Goal 150+

Year four ---- surplus jet engine is installed Goal 200+ or whatever the
driver dares

The really novel part is the 20 foot Walnut bar down one side complete with
brass rail.

The happy pit crew, sponsors and media will be on board throughout the runs,
sipping Scotch and Sodas and cheering on the sober driver, as they blast
though the traps.

The media will go wild. I can see it on SpeedVision now.

Cheers,

Don
