Speakers above my head are shot...

I'm sorry, but I find the upper speaker locations horrific. I chose to
place my speakers on the floor in front of me. I have a speaker to the left
of the parking brake, facing towards the rear, and a second to the right of
the pedals (almost center of coach). It provides for a better sound stage
for the driver. =)

I'll do the same for the passenger one of these days, except i will reverse
the right and left on that side, and run it off the rear channels of the
deck... Basically, the fader allows me to create just a driver sound stage,
or passenger, or both.. If we do run both, i can bias the balance towards
the left so that the double speakers in the center do not over power the
speakers on the outside walls.

Thinkin' outside the" headliner speaker" box.

And I completely agree with you - I believe all automotive audio
installations are at best compromises and at worst they are like the GMC
motorhome. Limited speaker positions available (all sub-optimal) poor
acoustics and high-ambient noise environment. Not like a theatre, living
room or home media room.

I am trying to make the best of a bad situation without doing a lot of
extra work in removing/cutting/replacing the side panels and then
letting me move on to other projects on the coach. Kinda keeps the
original layout (although if I had some color matching plastic it would
have been better)

Easy to do, relatively quick and now I have tunes while I work in the
coach. I'm Happy.

(And I may have stumbled onto something useful; several people have
asked privately about getting a set of my bezels.)

I'm convinced that the Doc is dealing drugs to most of the mining crew
because they either can't stay awake, constantly sneeze, grin like
maniacs, or won't look you straight in the eye (not to mention behaving
like a moron) and they wonder why a dwarf gets grumpy!

I just wanted something that worked and didn't have that 'ruined speaker
fuzziness' I was getting from the passenger side speaker that got
waterlogged sometime in the past.

FRONT SPEAKER REPLACEMENT UPDATE:

After making new bezels for new 3.5" speakers it became apparent that
there was enough room for 4" units in the same area if you space them
out and away from the headliner about 3/8" or so. Looks the same.

I upgraded from 3.5" to 4" to take advantage of the slightly better
advertised frequency response and yes it is marginally better and
(bonus!) the larger speakers cost a bit less than the 3.5" units.

Several people contacted me off-list asking about getting a set so if
there is interest I will be happy to make kits of parts required for the
changeover - new bezels, hardware and electrical crimp connectors for
$50 for the pair plus USPS flat-rate envelope ($8.40) shipping) You
procure the speakers (JBL Boss 4020 or similar), about $50/pair wherever
you wish. So $100 for the upgrade.

Not concert hall quality but better sound than OEM although the 'look'
is not vintage.

Updated post below shows difference in appearance at the bottom of the
post.
