spark arresters

Hi Guys, just looked at some "Off-Highway Vehicle Area" info and they mentioned that a approved "spark arrestor" and "mufflers" are required.

Since I am spending most of my time camping / Boondocking of the main path, does any1 have any suggestion or info regarding these requirement.?

I understand that they are to prevent wildfires etc. Maybe our GMC doesn't need one because of the exhaust system., But I don't know this ..

The requirement for spark arresters is usually on the generator, and both
the US National Parks andthe Forst Service have that requirement, too. The
arrestor is just a metal screen in the exhaust system (often between
muffler and tailpipe) that prevents spark from escaping the exhaust pipe,
even in case of backfire. Or, it’s like a muffler but with traps for
sparks. When I installed my Generac, the arrestor came with it.

The Honda ev series have a nice small spark arrestor. Looks like a kid's model of a rocket ship from the 50's. Does not seem to hurt performance.

As one that was part of the time for this requirement, I can tell you why.

Most performance 2-stroke bikes of the period had straight pipe expansion chamber exhausts and those frequently blew out big chunks if burning carbon.
The mufflers often required to get below the maximum noise level were also straight through glass packs that did not stop the exiting burning chips.

The standard was changed some years back and now requires a screen with a 0.024" mess. This is way smaller than typical window screen, so assembling
one from hardware store parts is going to be problematic. But, they are still a common add-on or repair part for many off road vehicles be they bike
or ATV types. So, if you are worried, go to some place that deals in those and ask the parts guy what he can do for you. A smart one will have some
answers.

It is difficult for an engine like to Onan to though out such chips, and the standard Onan muffler would trap them anyway. But, as a 1973 build, I do
not believe that the existing muffler will be marked as compliant. It probably is, but if you get stopped by that ranger that was just harassed by
some idiot, he may not be interested in the facts. Ergo,
