To all my GMC Friends:
Need your help in preparing a list of items to carry in my GMC. For 6 years now have traveled the country w/ a cell phone and a copy of the black list! Have decided I should be more proactive - so would like your various ideas on tools, spare parts, and fluids to carry. Note - I am not a mechanic (so I am thinking basics) but am able to twist a wrench on occasion (when these old bones aren’t hurting too much). Thanks for your ideas and assistance.

Just pull another GMC that's in better shape than your's as a towd.
Problem solved! :p

I keep a full array of belts, radiator hoses, fuel line and air line.
At least a gallon of coolant, and oil.
A tool kit (I keep this one onboard at all times and have found it to be a godsend)

A multimeter and some various wire and fittings for a pinch.

To me the idea is to be prepared for the easy-ish problems. I i spring a leak in a hose or an air line (fuel line) it's a 5 minute job to replace it
and not have to deal with a tow and a shop.
If the water pump fails I don't want to be doing that on the side of the road anyway so I'll get the parts after the tow.

Keeping a log of when one has replaced the parts is something I rely on.
I know I have been called down at our shop re. how long since a part was
checked before a long trip as they know that if I break down, they will
receive a call from me, and it is not very pleasant.
Ignition module and coil is not predictable, so it must be carried. Fuel
filters are necessary as they can load up suddenly.
Heat reading gun is very useful to monitor wheel bearings.
Part # are good, but better yet, know your GMC shops as some of us will
give you part # without hesitation.

After our only real breakdown (self inflicted) I stopped
carrying everything including the kitchen sink. These days
my list is a combination of JimK's list and Dave Greenberg's

- Printed copy of the Black list
- Printed list of part numbers
- HEI module
- Fuel filter
- Laptop with all manuals
- Cell phone
- Credit Card

I figure if I keep on top of the maintenance and replace any hose
that is more than 9 years old I will be ok. If you kept on top of the
maintenance of your car back in the 70's you wouldn't be stuck on the
side of the road. Take it out and drive it every couple of weeks.

A Starter....

I just looked at the spares list, and that is not mentioned. In years past, this might not have been and issue. But it is now....

It was Sunday in Mid-Michigan when mine went out. There were none to be had in 100+ miles and that one was a maybe Monday afternoon.

We have a 23. Very little room for spares, but the starter is the only heavy spare I carry (not counting a spare wheel and tire on the back). The
starter all our coaches use is specific the vehicles that used the TH425 transmission. That transmission has been out of production for 40 years.
While the starter is just a different nose on a Delco 10MT (a started that GM used from the time that they changed to 12V until the mid-90s), they can
be difficult to source. If you are near a rebuilder, they can be rebuilt in a couple of hours, but you have to be near the right shop.

The stuff that lives in an HEI distributor is also a good bet. But that stuff is all inexpensive, small and light. And Essential.

The effort here is to recover from a minor breakdown with a minimum of hassle. For this reason, you really need to carry the manuals. That way, if
you have trouble and you cannot make the recovery on your own, those should help a competent technician complete the task. (I could add a page long
story, but I have a coach in my barn that needs a little work.)

So, concentrate on those things that are difficult to source and will leave you stuck until one of our wonderful suppliers can get it to you. With
luck, all this stuff will get old.

I'm going to stick my nose in here. Since it is just what I did/do, please
don't cut it off.

I bought my first '73-23' GMC Glacier in 1979. Bought and sold and drove a
few 26fters as well. Probably have over 250,000 miles on GMC's. I also have
over a million miles in RV's/travel trailers all across this un United
States. I carry a box of selected tools. Never carried a spare other than a
box of fuses in the glove box. Don't know why I (still) carry a spare tire
as I have never nor will I ever change a tire myself on the road. Only had
one flat on the road. Here is my experienced suggestion for your spares: The
black list, AAA card, ample time, and a GREAT ATTITUDE. Make the journey as
important as the destination and enjoy the ride. We have had more fun
getting there, enjoying the hiccups than being there. If you are blocking
the road, that's one thing. Otherwise you got a cold one in the frig, and
your bed in the back. Relax and enjoy. And the people you meet in this world
(and group) can be pretty fantastic. If you are in a hurry to get there,
don't take a RV. If you take a RV, take a GMC. This 40 year old is better
than most of the young ones.

I carry Gary Bovees DVD in the disc drive of my lap top. It has every
conceivable manual for every system in any coach, a parts manual, and
comprehensive wiring diagrams that can be enlarged to any size you need to
see it clearly. If I have my black laser printer with me, (usually do) I
can print out anything I need. Never go very far without my laptop.
Spares? Just one of each of everything.

Jim,
That is a good idea and while I completely agree, I am just a little too paranoid for that. I have always carried that pair of DVDs, but I also
(remember it is a 23) also made room for the two parts of the coach manual, the parts book and the interchange list.

And you may wonder why I persist in this madness - knowingly? Twice, the vessel I was aboard was struck by lightning. One memorable event left us
with 1 (one, uno, ein, ichi) functioning flashlight and that was the extent of electrical things still working. As it was a sailboat, the fact that
the main engine was useless was not a big issue.

We have always carried a laptop. In our most recent incident, that was damaged and lost some function. I have replaced it, but the replacement has
no DVD drive at all. I'm just sure it has enough hard drive that I can both DVDs on it and the interchange list and still have open storage. But I
will continue to carry the books and paper charts (maps) as well.

Yes, I know I am a little paranoid, but please note that I am old and paranoid.

If you need to figure out where you can possibly store all these extra parts like bearings,water pumps ,distributors, starter motors
,alternator,etc,,etc. the standard layout GMC has a nice spot behind the side bath sliding cabinet under the bathroom sink.just take the frame work
screws out to access. Also on the driver side all the way in the rear next to the generator enclosure accessed from the inside take out the screws to
reach this rear compartment.. use a note pad too help you remember where you stored the parts if you ever need them.

P S Yes - you would think having owned 14 Corvairs and 5 GMC MH’s (still own 13 and 3) that I am mechanically inclined - Well I just try to buy them in good mechanical shape - and most of mine are! 3 mechanical projects out of 19 are manageable w/ good mechanic friends.

Windshield Repair Kit?
On a recent trip had a rock chip the drivers window at left eye line of
sight. Two days later an eighteen inch crack spread out from the chip.
Now I need a new windshield.

I think that Ken Burton is organizing a Windshield replacement deal at the fall GMCMI Convention in Mansfield OH. Maybe contact him?
