Come-along Size for GMC

Hi Guys, Just got back from a great GMCWS meetup at Paso Robles. So many new friends to meet and so much to learn !

I am looking into getting a "Come-along" for getting my GMC out of a sticky situation. as in stuck in Mud on Forest Land or snow conditions.

Does any1 have any of can tell me more about what size I would need for my GMC?

Not sure what the pulling capacity needs to be? 2 Ton - 4 Ton ? etc Does this also means that I need the same strength "Recovery Tow Strap" or "Snatch
Strap"

Appreciate any input..

Take my advice, you will want to skip the come-along thought. My advice stems from using a 2 ton come-along on jeep xj cherokee(barely worked and
took huge amount of time to move a very short distance). And one other time using 2ea. 2 ton come-alongs getting a toyota corolla out of a dirch
full of snow.

Both of those times, was very time consuming and a bunch of work. I would never even think of getting the gmc unstuck
With one.

Gmc is 12,000 pound or about 6 tons. Stuck, I would wonder how much pull is needed.

Other then not getting stuck, invest big bucks on an electric winch. 9000-12000 pounds i would guess minimum. But a winch is only good if it works,
has good battery power and cables, and something to attach to. Not often do those things all come together. I have done my share of off roading
and have seen many winches that look nice, just not work when you want to count on them.

Dropping air pressure in tires has helped my gmc get unstuck.

Otherwise get some good mounting points and a good 3" 30000 snatch strap and keep a good 4wd truck nearby. And wood planks for under the tires to
drive on.

When choosing a winch for an off-road vehicle, it is common to recommend 1.5 times the vehicle weight for winch pulling capacity.

That recommendation is assuming worst case scenario.

For a GMC weighing 12000lbs, and being stuck on a slick surface, you should be ok with 4000lb pull capacity, provided the coach has not sunk into the surface more than an inch or so.

Due to the GMC frame design, do not pull at an angle from the rear. You WILL damage the frame. It is best to ONLY pull straight forward or rearward, and only with moderate force. It doesn't take much to bend the frame.

I can't imagine a winch for pulling a GMC out of a bog. GMC's do indeed get
stuck pretty easily, but winching isn't a good way to deal with it. For one
thing, you have to have something to attach the winch cable to, and that
isn't common.

Perhaps a better solution is to tow a 4WD vehicle. Yes, I have seen GMC's
extract themselves from mud with the help of a 4WD towd pushing from the
back. It's at least enough to counteract the weight transfer that causes
the front wheels to become unloaded in the first place.

There have also been some limited-slip differential modifications here and
there.

For me, prevention is better than the cure.

8,000 lbs. usually means at least a 4 to 1 whip or reeve.
To pull it 10 feet you need 50 feet of cable.

I my younger days, I did a lot of off-roading. Some of it was my employment at time. I learned early on to not go off at least a traveled gravel
road without, A chainfall, a long lead, an ax and a shovel. That was with a good 4WD. As it happens, we got out coach from a family that used to
frequently go to Mexico. They have different standards. To aid them the coach was fit with forged tow hooks on the front of the frame. They are
still there and I hope to never employ them. Without these, it would be very difficult to get a good purchase on the coach that will do no damage.

So, I guess I am suggesting that you don't take the coach anyplace you wouldn't want to ride a bicycle.

Before you resort to pulling a GMC out of a sticky spot, try using something to increase traction. You can buy purpose-built traction mats to toss under the tires, but a couple of cheap doormats can make the difference on a pinch.

A GMC motorhome has ZERO off asphalt capability. One of the other respondents suggested a capacity of a come along above 12,000 lbs.... What are you going to attach the other end to? For me, I carry a broom. For asphalt. Think about the weight distribution, most of the weight of our coach is in the back..... Try going up Manny's driveway if you want to demonstrate for your self.
