Does anyone have a photo of a GMC with a smooth top? Meaning no
A/C, no pod, no antenna, no rack. I think it would look good
this way and was wondering if anyone has done this.

Most of the sales lit shows them with clean roofs.
If you don't have access I could scan and send you something out of my
sales brochure collection.

Thecoach looks really neat but unless you spend all your time at the
Arctic Circle you may need an roof top A/C.

My old coach has no pod, no ladder and only one A/C (but 3 fantastic
Vents!) I took them off to clean up the lines and reduce weight. The next
thing to go is the spare tire.

Anyone have thoughts on how to mount a smaller spare under the coach? I
took out all my 3" plumbing so I have some room and if I can't get a sort
of a doughnut (with suitable weight capacity for an emergency) in there I
may move my mufflers to that space.

Dave: the cleanest roof that I have seen is in the clay mockup made by GM.
It is at:

http://www.gmcmi.com/history.htm

If you have copies of GMCMM, I think that Jim Anstett's 23 footer has been
pictured in there within the last year. It is a very clean top. I really
like the look of the smooth top. I think it comes closest to the vision of
the original designers (as you can see from the clay). I believe that Jim
moved his air conditioner down to the Onan compartment and then put in a
distribution system for air (He runs without a large generator). Does
anyone have experience with putting in a conventional (house window type)
into a GMC? I've heard a number of stories of it being done but have not
spoken directly to a coachowner who has it in place. Can anybody help with
this one?

Vic,

Bob Johnston, the owner of the 'Route 66' pictured at
http://www.johnstonsnest.com/aircraft.htm installed a central A/C under the
couch/bunkbed on the driver's side,
if I remember correctly. He says it works well, but keep in mind that he's
trying to sell his coach!

Vic, a club member has put a unit in his "basement". He has a stretched
GMC and back where the water and propane tanks were he installed a
compressor and an air handler. It is nice and quiet inside the coach and
all you hear is the air leaving the ducts.

I don't have his email address handy but he may be in the GMC MI roster.
His name is Paul Loeffler and he lives in Florida. He is especially
knowledgeable about GMCs and GMC cooling. He has published info in the
past about improving the ducting system for the engine air as well.

Send him a note.

Hi Vic

Jim Bounds removed his butane tank (or never had one) and put an air
conditioner in its place in the Dumpster. He then ran overhead ducting to
the front of the coach. It don't look too bad.

This might be totally useless and out of date information, but my
recollection of early 1950's Chrysler/Imperial AirTemp automobile A/C units
was they operated on R22. AirTemp also made home A/C in the sixties at
least, perhaps theres scope for incorporating components of either or both
systems into a GMC built in A/C system if you researched the old parts
catalogs.

Just a thought
