Smoking Generator

When I got my GMC, the previous owner had rarely used the generator. It was
hard to start, would sometime quit, and smoked like crazy, even though it
only had
210 total hours. It also burned a quart of oil every 2 to 3 hours!

I found a local ONAN dealer who with a tuneup and carb rebuild solved all
the problems
except for the smoke. He suggested changing oil at shorter intervals as
compression was
fine and he gave the unit a clean bill of health.

During the next 20 hours I changed the oil twice, no help. I then added 1/2
a quart of Dura Lub.
The smoking quit within 2 hours. It has never smoked again and I now have
about 300 hours
on it. It also started running a little smoother.

Was it the DL or just finally new oil and a few regular hours of usage - I
have no clue - but it is
great now. I change my gen oil every 25 hours and filter every 50. It now
burns 1 qt of oil every
15 to 20 hours. Someone told me if I vented my gen compart better I would
probably reduce that
even more.
