Slamming Headers

Hello GMCers,
I was wondering what the consensus was on the article that appeared in
the December GMC Motorhome News in the column, Coach Talk, by Wes
Caughlan. He states that "Headers on GMC Motorhomes seem to do more
harm than good. That's why we retooled all of the cast-iron exhaust
manifolds this year and will have them available for many years to
come."
Seems like another myth is coming on like gang busters so that a few
can profit big time or is there some truth to this one??? Should those
of us with headers panic and go to Cinnabar for all new cast iron
manifolds. Just wondering what the consensus was on the net. He also
states that carburetor enleanment is the primary cause of exhaust
manifold heat which makes sense but is that reason to po-po headers?? It
seems to me that allot of this stuff I read in this publication is self
- -serving for Cinnabar. There is good information too but a lot of
malarkey mixed in.

FWIW I was told by two separate exhaust specialty shops to not go to
headers. The cast manifolds do a better job of keeping the heat in the
system and out of your engine compartment. This is what I was told. This
applied when I went to the three inch pipes. Didn't ask about the OEM
system. Darren

Boy looks like more myth material to me. Sure headers can harm your engine,
if your engine runs to lean as a result of the addition of headers. But than
with the new gas, we are burning out valves with the old headers and warping
the exhaust manifold also.

Does everyone really think that cast iron exhaust manifolds outperform
headers? Not likely. And now we have technology on our side, and we can
have headers that not only increase horsepower inexpensively, but actually
run cooler than stock manifolds. Swain Technology is one of the best

You can also do the OEM manifolds! Swaintech offers the coating for
your exhaust tubing also. Go to the site and check it out.

One more time,Jan.00 issue of HOT ROD has a very good spread on
COATINGS(Swain) ,Freezing,and Vibrating, Powertrain Components.2 of many
ways to get heat out of the Engine compartment is to ,1 install coat
headers,which retain the heat inside the tube until it hits the mufflers and
stacks up there.2. This is what I did.Since I could not get coated headers
in time,I had Jeff Sirum Make a solid Y pipe,ran the pipe down the OEM
llocation until it reached the rear,angled ,support made as gental curve to
90 degrees as pos.low restriction Camaro muffler crosswise and exited out
the drivers side.Used 2 1/2" pipe since the Thorleys have a 2 1/2 collector
no need to slow the exhaust down with 3" pipe,its not a 2 stroke. Heat runs
all the way to the back before it meets any restriction(muffler) .Results
cooler ,quiter.Thats what I did,got what I wanted to get,do what you feel
comfortable with.

Arch I have a more basic question. Who says that our cams have no overlap?

There is a definite improvement in both horsepower and torque with the
addition of a cam and headers. You have the cam card for your mondello cam.
What are the intake openings and exhaust closings for the cam? easy enough
to find the overlap

no I dont know what the overlap is arch. I do have the data from mondellos
book, but overlap is not one of the things that is listed.

Arch if you look at your cam you can see the overlap visually.
