Hi "Netters"

It occurs to me that some of our subscribers don't use a signature in
their eMail set up and consequently it is not always easy to determine
just who is asking the question or providing the reply.

I'm sure every eMail mechanism has a provision for adding a signature
automatically to your message. Most of the Netters also add the the year
and model of their "mistress" and others may add something else to their
name, like a proverb or the thought for the day, but as a minimum a name
should be added to the bottom of every message.

At Marion I found it so easy to catch up with other "netters" knowing
them by name. I can't same the same for sqtr8840zzqt1939@ hair.net or
even worse a 'BLANK"

What do you think?

I agree.

Most Signature files should contain at least your name and your email
address. Most e-mail programs (Exchange, Outlook, Etc) will automatically
insert the signature. I belong to several list server and most folks also
include the make and ID of their special interest vehicle (GMC, LBC, Etc).
BTW, LBC is the acronym for 'Little British Car'.

(Mine is a little excessive - I know it.)

Sadly, Juno only gives me a maximum of 5 lines Tom, otherwise I could go

I also have AOL and hate it with a passion. I seldom use it, probably for
the reasons you mention, Arch. It sems to me you can go to preferences
and add a signature. I'll sign on and try it later. As a retired IBMr I
grew up on Podigy and always liked it. They had an especially active RV
forum. I find AOL's lacking.

BTW, many thanx for your efforts on keeping us "Netters" up to speed on
all the good web sites!

Arch,

Another appreciative listener!!

Bill

Regarding "Signatures" and Internet Access via AOL and others, people have
been saying lots of things. I'm just one more voice, but listen for just a
couple of minutes before you delete this message.

Having spent most of my adult life in computer communications and having
operated one of the first 10 Bulletin Board Systems in the US, let me
ramble a bit and try to save everyone some difficulty understanding what
they've got. I won't get technical and will overly simplify things, but
will try to get the main points across.

There are generally two types of internet access providers. AOL, MSN, AT&T
and CompuServe (among others) attempt to offer much more than just internet
access. They want you to use their service which sells advertising
revenues. The second type of internet access provider has a bare-bones
approach wherein they have a homepage and links to tools like Yahoo!,
AltaVista, etc. They aren't in the business of selling advertising - they
are in the business of providing access to the internet.

AOL in particular requires (almost) that you use their software to fully
take advantage of the services they offer. Others like my host Netcom,
provide you with only the bare minimum to support communications. After
that, you're on your own to get an email package, a Web Browser, a News
Reader, FTP, IRC, Finger, Ping, Gopher, etc. (Those last few were my
attempts at computer-jargon humor, so smile! But don't worry about them.)

What generally appeals to people subscribing to AOL is simplicity. What
irks them later is simplicity.

As you grow in your software needs and increase your demands on your
internet service provider, consider using someone like Netcom
(1-800-NETCOM1 for information) and selecting standalone software that
meets your needs. I use IE4.02 from Microsoft (purchased through Netcom
for $4.95), Eudora Light (email - free version), and NewsExpress (for
reading about ten of the ten thousand news groups available on the
internet). A great place to get this software is the following URL -
http://www.winfiles.com/

Because I travel, I use Netcom and their hundreds of local access numbers.
I'm guessing that traveling is in your blood too, or you wouldn't subscribe
to this mailing list. If you don't travel much or don't use your computer
on the road, check with your local internet access providers (see your
local Yellow Pages under Computer Communications or Online Services) for
the best deals, the fastest access, and, best of all, no busy signals. In
four years, I can only recall one busy signal from Netcom.

Standard disclaimers apply (grin) insofar as I have no affiliation with
Netcom etc.

The bottom line is this: if you're not happy with your current service,
switch. I would not wish AOL on my worst enemy, let alone a bunch of GMC
pals.

Best regards and happy modeming.

......snip.....

GTEnet is another good one that is available most everywhere as a local
call. Or their 800 number is available anywhere for $4 per hour. With a
sonic coupler for your modem this makes any pay phone your gateway to the
internet.

This would be my recomendation also. These 'hold your hand' ISP's are only
good for getting your feet wet. After that, use your own tools and
techniques.
