Setting the timing

I just recently changed my timing chain. I attempted to set the timing
using a timing light. I connected my light pick-up to the number 1 plug
lead and I could not find the mark on the harmonic balancer. I then
remembered something I read but I am not sure if I have it right. The
manual indicates that the number 1 cylinder is the front drivers side. But
the distributor cap has the number one as the front passenger side. Which
is right?
