Subject: GMC: SolAire Furnace

My furnace quit last winter and I have just now been able to work on it. The
trouble-shooting procedure in the manual showed the IGNITION PACK to be bad.
I took this bad part to an RV Heating and Cooling shop. The technician
immediately recognized this as being from a GMC coach and offered as a
replacement Norcold part number 61746122. I installed the new part and fired
up the furnace. At first, it coughed, spluttered, backfired, and belched
black fumes out the exhaust vent. Didn't sound good at all. Finally, it did
fire and ran normally with the thermostat bringing several on/off cycles for
about half an hour. I thought maybe the system was now purged and would be
okay. However, after letting it sit idle all night, I tried to start the
furnace again this morning and it backfired sending black soot through the
exhaust vent again. The gas is now turned off and the furnace is staying off
until I figure what must be done. I hesitate to make any adjustments to the
air/fuel mixture control because this furnace was running fine until the
ignition died last winter.

Any advise?

Guess I can take a shot at it..... I also have a Solair, mine is working.
The best recommendation of the list on how to repair the Solair is to
replace it.

they are no longer made and parts are not available.
there is a weakness inside that could release dangerous fumes
repair could cost more than a new unit.

I am keeping mine because it is working well but when it goes bad, I will
replace it with a Surban or one of the others that have been used. You can
find information on these in the archives.

As to your actual problem I have not heard of this one so I am sorry but I
cannot be of much help... I think Emery has done more with this unit but
seems like he is on the road for a while. I am sure he will answer but
might be a while. He is on the way to Rayne Rally.

sorry I could not be of more help, maybe someone else can

Sorry, wish I could offer advice. Gene and I took out our Sol-Aire and just
cleaned them, put lub in the motor and put them back together. I took mine out
and did take out the end of the box and cleaned the spark. But that was all.
Since I have not had any problem I can't offer any suggestions as to why the
thing smokes. Many have taken out their Sol-Aire's. Cinnibar doesn't like
them as they are a cause for problems. The only thing I really added was a co
detector so that if the sol-aire malfuntioned, it would not kill me. So, until
my sol-aire quits, I will continue to use it.
