Save the GMC Molds!

Yeh, if you're doing hand or gun layup They probably ought to be stacked in a back room someplace, is that the current idea?

That looks like a very "deep pockets" undertaking. Starting with a blank
piece of computer screen, and a hyperactive imagination and more modern
materials, just dream what could be done. We know all the pitfalls already.
Most are related to the drive train.
Interior materials have come a long way, baby. But the shape of the
outside needs nothing. It would take a whole truckload of benjamins, with
little hope for recovery.
Still, that never stopped Tucker, or John Delorean, or E.L. Cord, or
Ransom Olds, or a whole bunch of others. It is what makes AMERICA great.

It is a deep pockets adventure, not undertaking. Every single advance defies the statistics that say it will fail. I'm putting some money where my mouth is.

That is a very possible undertaking. The steam powered circular saw mill at
antique powerland has cut a lot of the lumber for the wood clad museums
(14) at last count on the grounds. Those guys love that kind of a project.

Those molds were offered to me for just moving them out of the storace lot.
I did some calling around and realized the cost of storage was going to be
a on going cost and they need to be reconditiond as they have been out in
the elements.
To get the GMC community to chip in is a task in itself as I have learned
twice.
The last wass a fund raiser for the CMTA Foundation for the World Speed
record attempt.
Ans the other was to raise funds for the GMC List sight support.
We would put up few thousand dollars of prizes for a donation drawing as
were not allowed to have a raffe.
I recalled we received tremendous donated help from Steve and Nancy
Fuergason(sp) and others.

What would it cost to have someone who knew what they were doing meet up with the molds and get a really good scan of each and reduce them to a set of
files. Surely in this world there's an outfit capable of doing this.

Great idea! And seeing that handheld 3D scanners capable of scanning
stuff up to 6' x 6' x 6' for less than 2 fill-ups in Germany, I am
pretty sure someone in the FL (or whereever the current molds are),
could get this done in a day or two per mold.

Are you confusing the molds with possibly gas tank molds?
They are talking about molds of body parts perhaps 20 feet or more long.

There are number of tail light assemblies that are available. I sell a set of LED tail light assemblies, out of all new parts. As for headlights there are replacement single round and single square lighting units available.

I will be at the Fall convention with a number of tail light assemblies for sale.

I am the personified confusion :-)

I knew it was about the body molds, I didn't know how long they were. I
am sure there are portable 3D scanners available that could go that
distance, and/or people capable of using the mentioned one together with
software to "glue" the scans together. Most probable taking way longer,
but still the way to go imho. Once you have a 3D model of all the molds
the information is safe, and if ten years from now large 3D printers are
available easily, one can easily reorder all needed panels out of some
new material. I'd like that :-)

The magic of manufacturing happens in different ways depending on production level needed. The body molds were designed and manufactured to support production levels of 20 parts per hour. The 3D scan of the exterior surface is an excellent idea, no matter what molding technique is used.
