Rodent/critter repellant for RVs stored outdoors

There have been some fairly recent comments about using lights to keep rodents and other critters out of RVs stored outside. I recently gave my 30 foot travel trailer to my son who lives north of Albuquerque in the Placitas area. Harbor Freight's current sale flyer lists rope lights for $9.99 per string and I wonder about the amount and manner in which these should be deployed to keep the critters out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I know this might sound crazy, but yesterday on the local news they had a segment that delt with keeping unwanted animals out of attics and crawl
spaces.

1. Apple cider vinegar.
2. Smelly shoes, clothes, etc with human scents.
3. Ammonia.
4. Predator animal urine (bobcat, mountain lion, etc). Good luck extracting that, maybe wear gloves!!

Having lived in Santa Fe for 19 years I am familiar with the rodents found in the Placitas area. Deer Mice and Packrats.

There were a lot of Pinon trees whose cones provide the Pinon seeds (nuts) that we use on salads. The Deer mice and the pack rats (wood rats) gather these and also the berries from the Juniper bushes. They like to store these in the RV for the winter. I once found four separate large piles in a rear cupboard. Piñon nuts, Juniper berries, bird seed and Decon pellets which were all stored for later eating

The Decon pellets were hauled from my garage about 150 yards away. The bird seed was hauled from a bird feeder by the patio behind my house about 200 yards from the motorhome. The parking area for the GMC was surrounded by Junipers and Pinons
We stopped feeing the birds to eliminate the birdseed problem.

We tried all the usual suggestions: dryer sheets, mothballs, cat urine, camphor blocks, etc. None worked.
we found that the ultrasonic mouse preventer plugins worked best. We also found a peanut butter baited mouse trap worked well for the mice but it had to be frequently checked.

Those things worked for the interior of the GMC but didn’t protect the wires on top of the engine or on top of the Onan which were favorite nesting places for pack rats. I once opened the cover to my engine and a 12” pack rat jumped from its large stick nest onto the frame rail. He lay there until I bumped him with a yardstick The nest even had a mouse trap hauled from the front patio and a small Decon pellet box from the garage.

Both the Onan and the engine had many wires and vacuum hoses chewed off.

The best solution we found for the Onan and engine was to run a light extension cord with a 7 watt nightlight. One laid on the onan and the other on the engine. We cleared several nests until we tried the lightbulbs. They will not build a nest in a lighted area so we kept those on for 24 hours a day. That took care of the pack rat problem. So light bulbs work well. I don’t think that you need strings of them. A single bulb will work but the light doesn’t shine under the cupboards or beds.

When we moved to the Denver area we no longer were surrounded by Junipers and Pinons and we are able to keep the GMC in its own garage. No more mice problems. We still keep a baited trap in it but haven’t caught a mouse in over 5 years we’ve lived here.

Although Albuquerque is about 2000' higher than Tucson, I think they still have the same pack rats as we do here. I use rope lights around my coach
and it has worked well. I used to go to the trouble of stringing them out under the coach, but now I usually just surround the coach with them and it
seems to work just as effectively.

I'll forward this to my son, Jim, but since he has coyotes and bobcats roaming around his little "ranchette" I'm not sure having a yard cat would be a good idea. They make sure that their dogs are only out by themselves for necessary body functions!

I have already forwarded a couple of other suggestions to him.

I have tried everything--poison, traps, ultrasonic devices, you name it.
Nothing works. But I've never installed lights.

I've never had a mouse in my garage (20' from the coach), and I keep the
garage lights on 24/7.

Sometimes I'm a little slow. But now I have something new to try.

Works for me. We have several types of rodents living within feet of our coach. Pack rats (wood rats), kangaroo rats, deer mice, and at least two
types of ground squirrels. Since I started lighting up the coach at night with light ropes connected to a photocell switch, and using the Rid-a-Rat
LED strobes, I have not had one single rodent in the coach, the engine compartment, or the generator compartment.

Try it.

We live out in a rural area with natural surroundings. Critters abound
here. All the usual suspects. Grey squirrels, Red squirrels, chipmunks,
possums, skunks, cotton tail rabbits, mice, etc. We have a large pantry
with floor to ceiling shelving to store off season dishes, seldom used
baking pans, light bulbs, and the list goes on. Judy went to retrieve a
bundt cake pan and found it nearly full of cat kibbles. Upon further
investigation, more dishes and pans on every shelf contained some kibbles.
Never saw the critters that stored them there, so they must have been
nocturnal. Put out copious amounts of warfarin and not long after, the
pilfering of kibbles ceased. Other GMC owners use strings of led lights to
good effect as well.

As I live in the same neighborhood I have had issues with the same little huggers too. Saturday when I went to move my parked VW I discovered a
packrat had decided to collect all manner of caucti,old gloves and who knows what under the hood. At least they hadn't started eating the wires yet.
And the lights seem to keep the little beasts away. Hal

Irish Spring bar soap. Cut out the "top" (long dimension) and place
throughout the vehicle.

Keeps the mice away; I can't vouch for larger critters. And, a somewhat
pleasant smell.

How long does it work for you? Do the mice ever get used to it? I know
the Irish Spring odor lasts a long time to my senses, but I don't know
about meeces. It works for a while on deer in the roses, but seems to
only last one spring.

We have different mice.
We found the chips of Irish Spring nibbled on. That was probably the same family of mice that shredded the dry sheet to make nesting material.

Shotguns really mess up the woodwork.

The rope lights you refer to at Harbor Freight are solar lights. They do
not get charged enough to stay on all night. They are not very long so
you would need several sets. For just a little more you can get the 120V
strings 18' long. Not at Harbor Freight.  You would need at least 3 of
these. I use them while camping all the time.  They keep racoons and
possums a way too.
