Road Service Programs

I don't know that we've ever kicked this topic around. What's the best
road service to use. FMCA and Good Sam both have programs for their
membership. How do they stack up against AAA, Exxon, et al? Are there
others with better programs, especially considering how far you make
need to two a GMC to get to a GMC-competent shop?

I have been with RV Emergency road service for one year now. They are
so good that I never had to use them.
1-800-777-4542. A California based RV service.
Has anyone had any experience with them.

Patrick,
One has an advantage if one is a mekaneck; if one isn't then one may want a
new RV. Fix it before it breaks. The old saying, " if it ain't broke don't
fix it" - I don't want to travel with that person. Road service programs are
good but don't take the place of maintenance. I'd also like to belong to a
good travel club. Know of one? Please advise. Thanks. Sam Pickens

project themselves as perfect really upset those of us who are. Don't you

I called the local towing services and they
suggested Allstate RV Roadhelp. We had a
transmission breakdown at the very end of
a 7000 mile 6 week trip this spring and
Allstate moved our Elganza SE 200 miles
on a flatbed to Ken Freys in Quakertown PA.
I've heard others do as well but I can vouch
for Allstate.

Hi sam,

I just had occasion to use Camping World's service, which by the way, is
administered by the same company that handles Good Sam's program.

I had to call them twice in two days; once for a blow out on I85 in SC
and the next day when I got locked out of my toad.

They were efficient, the tire guy was very good, and altho it took the
locksmith an hour to get into my Saturn, I guess that it was Saturn that
made it difficult. (Anti theft stuff)

So, I am quite satisfied, so far, with Camping World's service provider.

I have used Good Sam once several years ago and they did a pretty good
job considering I was 100 miles from the nearest warm body!

Patrick, there is some wild discussion going on in the alt.rv Newsgroup
about this very same topic. It seems that AAA (at least in Northern
California) has quietly (without notice) eliminated ALL services on RV's -
including tow vehicles. I do not know if other areas are similarly
afflicted, but I'd read the fine print before renewing my AAA coverage.

That said, I can recommend USAA (both for insurance and their roadside
coverage). If any of you are ex-military officers (which I suspect to be
the case through the "pilot thread"), check out the USAA benefits. I don't
recall specifically what is covered, but I do know that I automatically got
covered last year because I had towing insurance through them.

On my GMC, I pay $380 per year for < 10,000 miles as a rider under
homeowner and family vehicles. I'm sure I would have a heck of a time
collecting more than the depreciated value since it is not an agreed
value policy.

How does your premium compare ? (not sure what you mean when you say
40% savings)

Ed,

Check your owner's handbook. If this is Road America out of Coral Gables,
FL they will not service any RV's of our vintage.

They continue to renew policies but they made a change in the handbook
without notification. When our members learned of the change and tried to
cancel a renewal that wasn't 10 days old, they had the arrogance to try
to hit us with a cancellation fee!

We complained to FMCA and they were dropped by FMCA June, 1997!

Just a word of caution to anyone with towing insurance....check the fine
print before you need to call for assistance. And with towing insurance
provided by your regular auto broker, et al; make sure that when they
say they will tow your vehicle to the nearest qualified repair facility,
that they and you are talking about the same kind of a facility. Not the
local Sunoco or Exxon gas station with a mechanic.

insurance and the cheapest RVAA will quote me is $634. That's with a value
of only $13,320 and for bare minimum coverage including only $1,000 for
contents.

The best deal I've come up with is Allstate. Bare minimums also:

Royal Globe is now Royal SunAlliance, although the policies may still
say Royal Globe. My company was bought out in January and the name
changed, but we're still issuing policies with the old name and probably
will be for some time. Too much trouble to change the filings in all 50
states.

Yep - that's the best part. These guys know what we drive. I'm always
amazed when a NAPA counter guy knows what a GMC is. Still haven't found
a GMC conversant counter guy at a Car Quest, Pep boyz, etc. yet!

I got the quote from Deanna at 1-800-521-2942 last week and again today to
make sure I was comparing apples to apples. She, too, chastized me for
wanting so low of liability coverage. I may raise it later, but not now.
Do you reckon I'm getting the wrong folks? She said that they're coverage
automatically includes Road Assistance and has a disappearing deductible
over a number of years if you don't have any claims.

I'll take all the advise I can get at this point.

Unless you live in a hi risk area your quote should be lower. Check RVAA
again. Call Ed Bremner at 800 847-6925 and ask him to take a look at your
quote.
