Many years ago I planned to remove my spare tire carrier and make changes
so that I could reverse the tire and carry coiled hoses or cords inside it.

I have long since lost that valuable info on how to alter the original
carrier to be able to reverse the spare!

Any chance anyone has some pictures or a copy of the drawings? There are a
couple of us interested in this.

Thanks

I believe the first person to come up with the reverse spare and
hose reel was Chuck Aulger. He had a flock of innovations. I
remember seeing his coach and wondering "How does he come
up with these ideas"? But that was Chuck.

Gary,

Gene Fisher posted a link to Chuck's setup on his website.

IIRC Bob Drewes had the same setup on his coach that is now owned by Keith and Kim Weeks.

My question was How did he do it?

Rob showed me one method:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g5308-gmc-spare-tire-mount.html

...but I keep thinking about the one I remember seeing years and I mean
years ago. I have a copy of it but it would have been 1996-1998 or so and I
would have printed it off on paper. I printed anything of interest to me up
until 24,482 messages ago. So which one of the Zerox printer paper boxes
should I start looking in first. Oh, and no, I did not put the great ideas
box of papers in any particular order. So how long does it take me to
implement an idea from the original viewing ...about 15 years or so if I
rush it through!
If pathetic people need a leader, let me know!

The one photo album shows just mounting the tire backwards. You are not going to gain much by butchering up the factory mount and if you are a amateur welder, beware! JMHO

I did that MANY years ago. All that valuable gained space is STILL too
difficult to access -- and EMPTY.

Bill Brown made a carrier to replace the factory carrier that would mount
the spare reversed. I don't think he found much market for it and he no
longer makes it as far as I know. My coach didn't have a bracket, so I
bought his prototype--one welded-in nut was slightly misaligned which I've
worked around.

So, for maybe a dozen years, I've had a reversed spare, and that space has
never enclosed anything but air. The idea was water hose storage and the
like, but I never made that happen--or really needed it.
