I just viewed Tom's bearing puller site. He mentions reinstalling the 3
retainer bolts & "keep a civil tongue." I pass along this hint I
received from a member years ago:
Purchase 3 hairpin cotters whose diameter is slightly smaller than the
bolts.
Spread each one so it fits loosely but somewhat snugly over each bolt.
Tie a piece of string to the small end of each cotter & then place the
cotter onto the bolt a few threads from the head.
You should have already "cut" a slot in the end of the bolt opposite the
head that will accept a small flathead screwdriver.
Position the retainer in place & push the screwdriver through one of the
holes from the outside of the knuckle, at the same time positioning one
of the bolts on the end of the screwdriver.
Push the bolt against the screwdriver & turn the screwdriver ccw.
After a couple of threads are seated, pull the cotter off.
The purpose of the cotter pin/string combo is to enable you to maneuver
the bolt into position w/o losing it. Works every time!
