Hoping this is appropriate for the list. If not, I apologize in advance.
My wife and I are planning to purchase a coach that we can use in what is
left of our retirement years. I have only had the opportunity to physically
look over one coach in person and that was without my wife. I have been
talking with Bob Dunahugh and am leaning very heavily towards purchasing
his. The problem is that I am in Southern Vermont and he is in Iowa. My
question is there anyone within a couple hours drive who would be willing
to let us tour your coach just to get a better feel of how the vehicle
feels? Bob's is a 73 Canyonland with rear couch but most any models will
help us with our research.
If this is something you can help with please let me know. Feel free to
email me (neilrewired) or give me a call at 802-257-1258.
Hoping to join your ranks in the near future.
Sincerely, Neil Manders, Brattleboro, Vermont

Good question and good to do some in person research if you can on the different layouts. Find one you and your better half are comfortable with.

Id look at or download the GMC assist Black list for someone close in your area and see if they can give you a tour.

There may also be some rallies within striking distance in the spring/summer where you could meet a number of owners, tour coaches and see whats out
there.

Best of luck in your search.

Neil,

Excellent idea to look at several coaches WITH YOUR COPILOT prior to making
a purchase decision. There are a multitude of different layouts as well as
pros and cons depending on when the coach was built. The amount of
time/expense you spend in your search can be easily off set by purchasing
the “wrong” coach for you. Look at many and ask lots of questions here.
That said, it’s well known here that Bob is very mechanically capable and
from following his freshening up of that coach on line here I’m sure that
his coach is a great value compared to his asking price.

Bob Donahugh does meticulous work. He has made several great upgrades on that coach and the price seems really good (read that as low) for all that he has done including all new appliances, suspension, engine, etc.
That rear bed setup is what is called a gaucho bed and looks like a very comfortable and usable setup. Quick to convert from a seating unit to a sleeping configuration.

Thanks for the add to the list. I have a related newbie question. If GMCMH are as good as members rave about, why aren’t they being snapped up as soon as they come on the market, and their prices higher? It seems to me that for the cost of a used car today one can get a nice, mechanically updated MotorHome.

What am I missing?

Hi there, I'll shoot you an email.

I'm in East Putney VT, 78 Kingsley, rear bedroom. I have it a little ripped apart, I undid the back bed platform (removed headboard/foot locker)
We've had it 3 summers, I love it.

I'll send an email

Cheers

Very few people NEED a motorhome, motorcycle, yacht (power or sail), airplane, etc. I think lots of folks are watching their finances more closely OR spending on much cheaper amusements.

Also, MANY that are on the market will need MAJOR work/expense to get them in good shape.

Like any old vehicle, they earn their reputation when they are in a state
of good repair, which many are not. They favor owners who have the skills
and facilities to bring them up to that level, the money to buy them at
that level, or the patience and money to pay someone else to do so. This
isn’t much different than a 10-year-old modern motorhome, which degrades at
a much faster rate, but the perceptions of new buyers favor the latter. A
good GMC costs about $30K (Bob’s is cheaper because he’s generous), either
in purchase price or repair/restoration costs. That’s why there are so many
mechanics and those with high levels of skills in the three-dimensional
world.

Also, being a vintage vehicle, banks won’t loan money on them, and it’s a
big cash purchase for many younger buyers.

And, it must be said, they are small, so the best buyers are those with
enough experience or forethought to understand the advantages of a small
motorhome, and the skills and inclination to enjoy the compact living.

Finally, one of the great appeals of GMC ownership is the shared experience
with other GMC owners, and some young owners might not realize or
appreciate that GMCs come with built-in reasons to use them.

Bob,

I think I can answer that question.

The answer is simply that so many people are afraid of old things. If it were any other old coach, there would be two real issues to deal with:
First is that most were a construction we refer to as Stick and Staple. They have a frame that is small section soft wood with siding and a roof that
is barely heavier than aluminum foil stapled on. When it leaks, and it will, the wood rots and the structure collapses.
Second is that many of the better coaches of the period while they may have had decent construction, now have no support for parts and service. That
is not an issue with the GMC coaches. There are a number of effective suppliers and if you join the international, you get a directory of replacement
parts by number.

We also have the ongoing effort to both supply replacement parts of modern manufacture and a lot of related technical improvements to make the
reliability more like you might hope for. There are some of us in this group that routinely do 10K mile tours in a season.

Why they are not in more demand? Because many people are afraid of old things. To me, this is particularly humorous. At the last international, I
had a chance to talk to a friend (there were a few hundred friends there, but that is for another time) and he had "traded" his GMC for a new Wini
View. He was not happy. The View was less reliable and had cost him more to run than his GMC.

Now, when you do buy a coach, get ready to do a lot of relatively simple maintenance. These are forty year old vehicles and they require more
attention than do modern things. None of it is all that difficult, but it all has to be done to keep her reliable.

Put it in your calendar right now for the international next fall. It will be in Mansfield OH. I happen to know how far that is from you because I
did that run a couple weeks ago. We were at the Strong on our way to Mary's HS reunion in Albany.

Read and reread Matt Colie’s response - he is right on the money.
I am not a mechanic but had always admired the old girls (GMC’s). 5 1/2 years ago I went to a GMC MI International convention - saw that there were mechanics available to work on them, parts available, and researched their amazing construction - about 8,500 of them still on the road out of the 12,921 originally built some 40 odd years ago -bought my 1st one at that very convention.
Have owned 5 in the past 5 1/2 years - now down to 3 and headed for 2 for the long term future.
You will not find the kind of comaraderie experienced w/ the GMCers by ownership of any other unit - no matter the price or make!!!

Bob,
Look at as many floor layouts as possible before you buy, and do the research for reviews. The GOOD news is that it is only two of you!! The GMCis
perfect for that! There's a lot of them out there.
And when you buy your dream coach, spend some money on it to make it yours.. you will not be sorry. Bob Donahugh is a stand up guy, and does guality
work.
you are in a special part of America! Back in 1980 I was a loathsome copilot with Air Vermont, living in Milton. Loved those chubby farm girls rom St.
Albans!! Rode my first mechanical bull at the Texas bar on Church street in Burlington!
Welcome to retirement!! I have 8 years to go and counting..............

Neil -

Call Bob Dunahugh and schedule a date. Have him meet you at the closest airport with the coach. Run it back to his place and stay in it a day or two
while you sit at his feet and learn the GMC Motorhome. Buy it and drive it home to VT. You won't find a better coach or a better deal. Seems
simple.

Neil:
I too had a reluctant spouse. Had her take just one step to get in the coach. Had her sit in the front seat to experience the view. Had her drive the unit. After 10 minutes, her question was "how come we had those other coaches with something like this is out there?"

Thanks for the support. Bob D. and I are working on this. We are searching
the group for possible New Englanders who might be willing to let us have a
tour. Figure a few positive visits will help greatly. 😉

Bilky, I understand you might have been the one who helped get Kelly and us
together so first let me thank you for that.
Kelly was very helpful. That is a really nice coach she had. She has
managed to make it fit her needs and even though she was still making some
modifications to the sleeping area, I found it incredibly helpful in my
quest to better understand the sleeping situation.
My wife was very impressed with the overall amount of light inside as well
as that great view from the co-captain's seat.
We are hoping to look at a few more in the New England area to get more
familiar with them and am currently working with Bob D. to try and make
that happen.
Thanks again for the help.
