Replacement Screws for interior

Hello GMCers

I spent a little time today pondering how we'll finish out the interior of
our coach. Looking at the screws that hold the window trim and front
headliner in place I know that a bunch are likely to break during removal.
I'm as prepared as I can be for that to happen. What I'm looking for are
suggestions as to the best screws to use as replacements. Cad or chrome
plated??? Others?

I'd like to not have more corrosion once I do the interior work. Also, do
any of you have experience in removing the visors? Any suggestions?

Just finished the work you are asking about. The visors on my '78 are held
in place by a single 3/4' hollow bolt that screws into a fitting in the
fiberglass above the headliner. To remove you need a 3/4 open ended wrench
and some time. Due to the pressure that is built into the visor rod it
Never really comes loose. You will have to fight it all of the way out. As
far as removing the rest of the headliner there were 3 type of attachments
on mine (factory, I think). There are sheet metal screws hold on the Rear
view mirror base and above the side windows. There are machine screws used
across the front, screwed into those pesky metal 'tophat' insert in the
fiberglass. And there wer 2 or 3 aluminum pop rivets just above the side
sliding window (I drilled off the head and replaced with Sheet Metal Screws.

I have used Stainless Hardware for each of the replacements. Maybe I was
lucky, but I had only one of the inserts get stuck.

One other note. The rear of the headliner was just sitting on top of the
beam that goes across the top. No connections of any sort. So two things
occured----> When I removed the last screw the ENTIRE headliner came down
befor I was ready, and----> It was a source for significant rattling that
now has been loced and solved! Hope this Helps.

Henry,

Two ideas for you:
1. stainless steel oval-head Phillips screws, size #8, if you like the look of
the stainless hardware;
2. white-painted #8 pan head Phillips, wherever you want the fastener to blend
in. I used these for the window trim.

Got both of these at Ace hardware. (The white ones are stainless, too.) Last
time I was in Home Depot I noticed that they have a wide assortment of trim
screws in a variety of sizes and finishes, too.

The threads on the stainless and white screws from Ace were a very close match
(perhaps identical) to the threads on the original square-hole GMC ones. A
marine dealer nearby has the #8 stainless ones with a coarser, self-tapping
thread, too.

By the way, I found out the plastic interior window trim is available from
Cinnabar. Corner pieces are about $6 each and a straight section approx. 4 feet
long is around $10.
