Removing Wood Trim

We're still in the middle of rebuilding the Palm Beach. I'd like to change
the ugly yellow laminate that is covering the vacuum closet and wraps
around to the front of the fridge area. Any ideas about removing the
laminate and the particle board that it's attached to? I'd like to replace
it with some other wood.

Big job ahead of you. The entire cabinet is screwed and glued together. Good
glue too. I can just about guarantee it won't come apart without destroying
it. If you want to make another cabinet, go to it. If not, good luck. I wish I
could be of more, optimistic help, but, been there done and doin it.

Read it wrong the first time. Use a hot iron right on the laminate to heat up
the glue and at the same time use a large scraper or putty knife to slide
under. It should come off quite easily. Hundreds and hundreds of patterns of
laminate to replace it with. Do not use anything between the iron and the
laminate. It is not necessary as it will not melt onto the iron. If you need
to replace the particle board under, then my first note applies.

Why not just put a veneer or laminate that you do like on top of the yellow?
You'll want to scuff the yellow well with a coarse sandpaper first to get
decent adhesion from your contact cement, but why tear it up? Another option
would be to paint it, but would not be terribly rugged.

Thanks for the information. I think that I'll look for a wood veneer to
replace the laminate on there now. I also plan to see if the same technique
can be used with the other cabinetry. I'd rather NOT rebuild everything!

Instead of removing it, veneer right over it. Less chance of screwing the
surface up when you attempt to remove the laminate.

A late note - but I've been too busy working and rebuilding the GMC.

While I was out of town my wife took the extra fiber board off the frudge
area in out Palm Beach. Here's how she did it:

1. remove the right hand side partition inside the vacuum closet. Several
screws hold it in place (about 6 screws) all reachable.

2. remove screws (4 of the 6) accessible from that side.

3. remove the gauge panel (this means a complete disassembly) to gain
access to the 2 remaining screws.

The siding will come off. You may want a helper to hold the trim as it is
being removed.

Now would be a good time to make Jim Bounds' Onan primer mods.
