Its exactly what you called it. It is rust. The burner flue (stack)
is plain steel and the water vapor that goes up it from the burning
of propane will condense on the surface and cause rusting.
Eventually some of the rusted metal flakes off and falls down.
Eventually the stack could rust through and you might get dangerous
fumes or flames through it which could cause even more problems.
Hopefully the metal stack is thick enough to not rust through while I
own mine. You can buy a new stack if yours ever rusts through
.
To clean out your stack, you can remove the vent cover from the roof
and reach down and pull out a diverter (most refrig. have this -- it
is a flat piece of metal that is twisted into a spiral shape and
helps to recover more heat from the hot gases). This is usually just
hanging into the flue pipe with a wire hook at the top. Once you
have this out you can reach down into the stack with a small round
brush (similar to those used for a home fireplace chimney) and clean
out the loose rust. If you do this every few years you won't have
rust flakes dropping down into your burner.
Really nothing you can do to stop the formation of the rust unless
you want to replace the stack with one made of stainless steel or
perhaps ceramic coat a new one but I've never heard on anyone doing
this.
