Emery:

Knock on wood or something, but I updated the original 3-way refrigerator in our
78 Royale to a 3-way Norcold about four years ago. With the previous and new
one's, I never worry about leveling the coach other than going down the road.
However I drive into a campground site, that's how I stay. Never any problem yet
with the refer.

Arch - I would shim it up on one side. Sometimes you cannot get enough air bag
elevation (or dropping) to level the GMC when parked. It the refrig is off level
to start it could compound the problem. I find that when I am within 1/2 bubble
on my level indicator I don't have any problems. If the refrig is operated with
it too much off level, the liquid becomes trapped in the coils and the refrig will
no longer operate. There have been several postings in the past about taking the
refrig out and turning it upside down to free the liquid block. It works but each
manufacturer has different directions to move the liquid down to the bottom. They
may say upside down for ten minutes, then on its left side, then on its right
side, etc. Call you manufacturer if you ever have this problem.

The worst part of this is that solid ammonia salts (insoluble) will eventually
build up and constrict the tubes so that it will gradually ruin
the refrigerator. Usually the freezer will still work but the refrigerator will
get warm.

If I park, for example, in a grocery store lot that is way off level, I'll turn
off the refrig. and hopefully remember to turn it back on before we get
underway. This doesn't apply to the compressor type 120 V / 12V refrigerators but
does apply to all ammonia/water systems regardless if the
heater is 12v., 120v., or propane.
