GMCers,

I have had it with Good Sam roadside Assistance. I have used their
service twice in the past 11 years and had to call them today for
another assistance. What a nightmare!

They are so incompetent and can't get any information correct and
it takes 3 and a half hours to get service. And this was just for
an automobile breakdown, not an RV.

My current coverage with Good Sam expires at the end of the month so
I am looking at recommendations from the forum for an alternative.

Does anyone have experience with Allstate, AAA, FMCA or other roadside
assistance programs?

I think that before Marcus Lemonis ( aka profit ) sets out to fix
someone else's business, he needs to concentrate on problems in his own
backyard.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Larry,
You should know that businesses like Good Sam etc are in the business of selling subscriptions to their service. Actually having to fulfill on their
"Service" is a irritant and a cost to their bottom line. Once they have sold you their service, their focus is on finding the next "New" customer.
Customer service is designed to stall and generally discourage you. If you get Po'ed and leave for another service provider, well that's OK, because
their competition is just as bad. In a few years you will be back and you are a "new Customer" again. All the management is paid bonuses based on
getting new customers. The number of customers lost is of no consequence in their business model.

Just my life experience and 30 years owning a cellphone store (don't get me started on that!).

Larry,

Since 1997 or before, I've had Allstate's RVRoadHelp. Thank goodness,
because I had to use it on 1 May 1998, 875 miles along the 950 mile way
home from Kerrville, TX with the new-to-me Birchaven. I've used it for one
thing or another, on the GMC or other cars, about once each 3 years since
then. After the last time, 384 miles from Tupelo, MS to "Henderson's
Garage", I thought sure they'd cancel my coverage. Nope -- I never heard a
word from them -- EVER. They just pay the tower and that's the end of it.

Now I will admit that it took a couple of LONG telecons, with a couple of
levels of supervision involved, before I convinced them that the nearest
CAPABLE repair facility was what I required. But they eventually agreed
that MY garage was closer than Applied GMC, GMC Coop, Sirum GMC, Ken Frye,
etc.

I think my first year with them cost $69 and I'm now paying about $129,
but that's OK.

I can't compare them with any others because I've never felt the need to
try them, even though I also pay trivial amounts for supposed coverage from
USAA insurance.

Larry,

We have been with AAA for many years. If you are, extending the service to RV Plus is inexpensive. I cannot recommend it as a stand alone because I
believe that the cost might be too high to be competitive.

If you recall, I had need of serious road service last year (July 2015). We were between Hot Springs and Little Rock AR. If you look on a map, you
will see that there is not much there. I was out of an area with a "native" AAA service, and it was apparent at the start that they did not
understand the issue. If you want gasoline or a tire change, you have a chance. If you go this way, and need their assistance be very ready to be
very clear what you need. (i.e. a big rollback or a Landol or maybe a 4500# wheel lift wrecker if you can get the rear end up)

During the event, the GMCnet was the most valuable asset. Fortunately, we carry wire (mobile internet access) and that was the difference between
workable and utter frustration. That difference all came from our community right here.... If you have a smart phone, it can probably do this, but
the service varies between moderately expensive and exorbitant. I suggest you check your plan before departure.

Though AAA never sort of did come though but only after (with the help of a specific GMC friend) I had managed to make arrangements to get the
situation accommodated. AAA did cover all the direct expenses to get the coach mobile again and some lodging and other expenses, it was not simple to
get reimbursement.

As said, this was not a total disaster only because of the help I had from this community.

AAA is different by each state, so read exactly what you are getting. Here in NC, AAA will tow where I want it to go up to 100 miles. There is
reference to "one 200 mile tow per year" and elsewhere in the policy it states the 200 mile tow only applies to automobiles, not RV's - even on an RV
premium policy. Most other providers read "nearest qualified shop" which is pretty vague, but also can be much further if they understand the
uniqueness of our vehicles. If they think the AAMCO two miles away can do it, you have no say. So think how you expect to use it. If I go cross
country, that year I'll have both!

Wasn't super fast, but they got me what I needed on one short tow last year.

Coach Net, which is what I have, has good reviews. I have never heard or read of any complaints on their service.

I searched the internet for RV Roadside assistance reviews on Good Sam, Allstate,
Coach-net and AAA. None came back very positive. Coach-net was probably the
best of the bunch and Good Sam ( aka Rotten Sam ) was, by far, the worst.

I am of the opinion to bank the annual fees that they charge and if I ever need
a tow then I'll have the funds to pay it.

I have a tow vehicle ( 4wd Tracker ) that could move the GMC some distance so
moving it off the road would not be an issue. If the breakdown required some
minor repair, I have the Tracker to run down parts. And I have a copy of the
black list handy also.

As I stated earlier, I used their 'service' yesterday and it was awful. I had
sent in a 3 year membership renewal about a week ago but I was so pissed off
after their runaround yesterday that I called and canceled the renewal for a full
refund.

So, my advice: Buyer Beware.

When we were on the Route 66 Rolling Rally, one of our party needed a 250
mile tow. The cost of that tow was over $1000.00. They ended up requiring a
second tow involving fewer miles. But, still over 250 bucks. Easily paid
for a couple of years of premiums. But, before I am asked, I can't remember
the insurance company. They will be here for a visit in a few days, and I
will ask them.

My 270 mile tow last October was $1750. $175 per hour for a 10 hour round trip for the tow truck and driver.

My National Interstate policy paid it. I received a check within a week.

I've never been towed, so I'm hoping my Allstate will do as stated.

The AAA branch which covers Northern CA, Nevada and Utah doesn't offer a RV plan the last time I checked.

Jack, they do offer one now. That's how my coach was towed the last two
times. And Allstate up in the most northern part of California is not a
good choice as since they are slow to reimburse the tow companies, the tow
companies are adverse to picking up vehicles and will delay, require
payment from you up front, or refuse for variety of reasons.

I also had Good Sam. I used it once for my SUV when it's transmission died on my wife. When I called for a tow they were only willing to tow the
vehicle to the closest transmission place, which was about 2 miles away. when I refused that and wanted it towed another 5 miles to my preferred
facility the said no problem, just pay the excess mileage. I blew up when I heard that. After talking to several supervisors they finally agreed to
tow me the extra miles at no cost. I can't image what would happen if I was calling about the GMC. I did not renew.

I had CoachNet and had been happy with how they treated me on 2 different GMC tows when I insisted on being towed to the nearest qualified service
facility. Once was to Buskirk's in Sandusky, MI and the 2nd time to my driveway.

I currently have towing (up to $2,000 max per tow) with my agreed value RV insurance and also have Allstate. I believe in "belt and suspenders" when
it comes to the GMC.

Aaa varies by state. And varies by whoever they contract with when you do break down.

Mn has aaa elite for $189 a year or so for my wife and i. 1 ea. Up to 200 mile tow to a location of my choice. And 3 tows up to 100 milea.

Plus i can use other service calls such as battery replacement, lock outs, spare tire changes.

So far after 15-20 years i have never had an issue. 2 times they came and towed the gmc without a question, multiple car tows. I have also towed
friends vehicls. And i recently witnessed a gmc owner call aaa and they winched a gmc out of the weeds, and hauled it home no questioned asked and
that coach had old plates and 4x4's for rear suspension.

Your luck may vary, but i know i get my moneys worth. I much prefer to work on my stuff at home then on side of road. And i do not want my wife to
be changing a flat tire or be stranded.

I would say i hear 25 good stories on aaa for the one bad. Usually the bad one's are when you are stuck in a very remote location.
