Steve good job on your research =
..........Backing plate had 4 bolts on '73s, 8 bolts later..............
I believe that all GMC's had 4 bolts, backing plates
to spindle/boggie arm and that the recall affected not only
the 73's but some 74's as well.
I found it interesting that some of the early coaches
had teflon boggie arm bushings! See Dealer Service
Technical Bulletin Group 4 number 75-TM-4
I suspect not many of these bushings would be left in
service as these would have been replaced long ago
by more conventional bushings.
The optional work you spoke of may have been related
to upgrading to the boggie arms using the larger bushings
or, I suspect more likely, replacing the teflon bushings.
Has anyone seen teflon bushings in these coaches?
The easiest check for the recall is the notches in the Hub
Pilot. For this inspection all that needs to be removed is
the hub cap.
My coach had the recall completed as evidenced by
the 8 notches in the Hub pilot
See Figure 1 and 17 in section 4 of the Maintenance
manual for photos of the 4 notch hub.
