Rear wheel dust caps - inner or outer or both?

How does one remove the inner dust cap without having to destroy it as I had to do. There's no way, that I can see at least with common tools, how to
get that out with the conventional dust cap removal tool (or carefully tap it off with a screwdriver and hammer as is easily done on the outer dust
cap that I suspect many of us have done).

That thing is so buried in there with the way the drum is attached...have I missed something obvious???

I use channel-lock type pliers perpendicular to the end of the cap. Then rock it in and out and they come off not too bad. To get a replacement inner
cap can be an issue.

A very small flat chisel. I start by going straight perpendicular at the
seam until the wedge of the chisel starts to grow the gap. Then lean the
chisel away from you and go a rotation. Now you should have room to insert
screw driver and twist. Kinda like opening a gallon of paint. A little at a
time.

I have used channel locks like Bruce did. It dents the inner cap. but does not make holes in them. I would not go with the outer caps only. Just a
personal preference.

I have a older large screwdriver that I bent the tip over like a paint can opener which gives me additional leverage to pry the inner cap off. NOT a good choice to NOT put the inner cap back on. You would be inviting a bearing failure because of the grease that would escape that area. The outer cap would catch the grease but not keep it in the bearing area. JMHO!

The original dust caps that were factory were a thicker wall construction than the currently available stuff today. I have a number of part number that may or not work and you need to check the OD and ID of the dust cap to insure that they will fit the hub. I have not tried these personally, I only offer the numbers as a starting point to solve your problem.

You brake adjustment tool works well to oooch the caps off without tearing them up. If you've alread made a limpy exhibition of them, there's a Ford
article that works. It's a bit taller and has a dished in face but fits and clears. If your cap is dented very much, it can hit the nut and/or
cotterpin holding the drum on. There's notvery m,uch clearance between the spinning dust cap and stationary spindle nut. Replace it.

The Ford article is actually a Cardone 'blister pak' cap. What you're interested in is the diameter. It's been years, I don't have the Cardone
number but look on the rack at the parts house.
