Rear wheel bearing lash exact procedure

I want the exact procedure (torque while rotating) then loosen and pin procedure but can't find. I know it has been posted here too.

John, use a torque wrench and tighten the nut to 25 foot pounds. Then,
unscrew the nut 1/2 turn. Using the fingers, turn the nut back to where it
just makes contact, and check the alignment holes for the cotter pin. If it
aligns, put the pin in. You are done. If it does not align, UNSCREW THE NUT
UNTIL IT DOES, then put the pin in. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.

I just did mine - 35 lb-ft, then loose one half turn and lock it there. The reaction arms supply a lock plate for the nut, so it doesn't get turned
at all after it's loosened. I lock whatever face is square to a lock tang. I've not had problems with this technique. Whether the extra 10 ftlbs
makes a difference, I doubt. If it does, I suspect it's made up for by not tightening the nut after a half-turn loose. The gurus may differ.
Failing to loosen the bolt after torqueing it >will< lead to failure - ask me how I know this.

I'm sorry but I would NOT follow that procedure!

The GMC MM was written SPECIFICALLY for the GMC and while it provides two methods they both specify 25 ft lb.

drums.

I've always spun the hub while performing the initial torque step. I understood the spinning to allow the bearing to "settle" in, while also
squeezing the grease where the rollers meet the race so there is a more uniform film of grease in place when you perform the final tightening.

To assist with this, I always punch out the center cover on the wheel, and then bolt the wheel on to the hub while performing the torque procedure.
This allows you to easily spin the wheel while you are performing the initial torque step. With the center cover off the wheel, you can access the
spindle nut for torquing.

Bolting the wheel on while torquing also helps for the last step when you hand tighten after backing off... What I do is pound on the tire with my
fist while hand tightening. When the bearing is too loose, you will hear/feel the end play as a sort of "rattle" between the bearing and the spindle.
When you overtighten, the rattle goes away. I try to tighten the spindle nut till there is just a tiny bit of "rattle". The point right before the
"rattle" goes away.

FWIW, I've found this to be more precise than the "hand tight" or "snug" you generally see in domestic vehicle manuals, and even more precise than
method where you measure the hub's resistance to spinning with a pull scale, which I've generally seen in import manuals.

The pull scale method never made any sense to me, because if it's cold out, the grease is way thicker than when it's 110, which would change how
freely the hub spins. And I'v never seen them post different measurements in the manual to use if it's cold vs hot.

To follow up--- about 800 miles at 70-75 it is still quite. Used the MM procedure and used Synpower and a Lisle bearing packer. The outer bearing on
the leading rh wheel (curb side) was rough on the inner surface though race and rollers looked ok. I only changed the outer and race as inner was
smooth. Makes sense that leading wheel gets the most potholes hammering the bearing.
